Specifically I'm looking for some kind of reference on how much water to use in ratio to the amount of rice. Further tips on cooking it just right(without burning the pot) would also be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I don't know what that silver box is but use the stove to be safe. If it's minute rice, you will see the recipe on the box but judging from your panic, I'd say you've got regular rice on your hands. Most rice cooks with double the water over the rice quantity so to cook two cups of rice do this: boil 4 cups of water with a dash of salt and a bit of butter. Add the rice and cover then turn the heat on the burner down to between 3-4 and time 12-15 minutes. When all the water is evaporated (around that timeframe) take it off the burner and leave it with the lid on for five minutes. After that five minutes is up fluff it with a fork and a bit of butter. If you've got chicken stock on hand you can substitute it for the water for extra flavour but if not, water will do. Hope it goes well!

Purchase a rice cooker. For a change, omit the butter and salt and substitute the water with 1/2 water and 1/2 chicken broth. Also you can use all chicken broth for a stronger flavor.

2 cups water for 1 cup rice---add some butter/salt to the water--the butter will keep it from sticking--takes about 20 mins

I would just go out and buy a rice steamer. Buy a bag of rice in the asian section of your supermarket. It will be the best rice you have ever had!

Two parts water, one part rice.

So if you're cooking two cups of rice, that's four cups of water!
