I own a ten year old Doberman and is the love of my life. I can tell you already fell in love with the dog havent you !!! I'm willing to bet you already either have thought or given the dog a name. I'm pretty smart ain't I. If you do take the dog in you MUST try all avenues and I mean ALL avenues to find the owner. Remember he's loved by somebody out there and chances are good they are heartbroken right now. Wouldn't you be ??? Try letting the local shelters ( that's shelters plural ) know you found him. Print a flyer as I'm sure they have a bulletin board.Animal hospital's , Vet's. Where would you go to find a lost pet. If thru all your efforts the owner can't be found - Take him in and give him LOVE !!! Oh yeah , maybe Doberman rescue in your area - google Doberman rescue.I say these things as I don't think you can truly be at ease with yourself unless you do what's right for the dog and try to find his human, pack leader, companion , owner . I compare it to stealing a car and NOT being nervous driving it around town. It's impossible.Do what's right and I commend you !! Dobermans are big BABIES, their the best !!!! Smart as hell too !!

Send her to me I have a 6mth old doberboy who would love a friend to help expend his energy!
Seriously you should call the aspca and ask them what the procedure is to protect yourself legally if you should keep her. Some states require you run and ad in the paper. Think of where you would call had you lost her (pounds, shelters, vets, animal control etc.) and call those places to report finding her. Make sure the people can identify her to be sure she is thiers if claimed, a bit hard with standard marking but they do come in a variety of colors, and you can say her age is "under a yr" and let them tell you her real age which your vet should be able to be pretty close on as they cut different teeth at different ages, any scars, don't say if she is cropped or docked or how long either if she is or if ears are standing or one flopped, where she was found (give general location only not specifics), make them give you these details to ID her.
It's great that you want to return her to her original owner (since you state she is in good body condition and likely loved and missed), there are a lot of people out there however that will attempt to claim her even when she is not theirs) by limiting info you can help her find her home and help prevent a person with less than honorable intentions claiming her. If you do keep her you will know you did your best to locate them, the same as you would want someone to do for you.

You appear to have done everything you can. I suggest you keep the puppy. The only other thing is to put an advert in your local free paper.
You have not stolen the dog and let's face it have probably saved it's life. Cars/Lack of food and shelter may have killed the pup so maybe it's fate.

Place a local ad on the news paper for a week to 10 days. Contact SPCA / Animal Control for lost and found for 10 days. If no one claim, I would keep him. If some one come up after that, you have a proof to show that you tried to locate the owner, and now it belong to you.

If it was me, I would put up signs letting people know I found the puppy and where, but I would make them give me a description. After that, I would keep the puppy . I am a complete animal lover and hate to see one not taken care of, and If I was able to keep it, I would.

You should at least put up some signs around the area, and/or put an ad in the paper.. I bet someone loves that puppy, and really misses it..

You can keep her while you are waiting.
As long as you try to find her owner by checking with the Animal shelters, putting ads in the paper, signs on walls and phone poles, you are doing everything you can to find the owner.
It just may be that the owner didn`t want her.

Well what sort of condition was she in when you found her? Did she look like she had been out a long time... dirty.. Does she look like a puppy that has been taken care of and wandered away.. or does she look like a puppy that no one properly fed and cared for.. If she looked like she wasn't well kept, I would keep her..
