Often in fiction there are secret headquarters that are completely self contained. What kind of electrical generators, in reality, could be operated and sustained without the knowledge of people within the vicinity of a "secret headquarters"? I ask this because I was wondering how feasible this is in real life with existing technology.

What might work and how might it work?

Technology being used to power space shuttles and others uses Fuel Cell technolgy. It uses hydrogen and oxygen that passes in the fuel cell and convert it directly to electricity. The emission would be simply water, in the process water can be splitted again by electrolysis using a solar panels and put back to itscontainer

Since wires and cable were invented there is nothing that says the "secret headquarters" could not be connected by wires to power lines or generators very far away.

Besides, when underground facilities were built for military purposes they were located deep enough underground that you wouldn't necessarily hear them even if they had their generators right there.
