Allergies and colds share many symptoms, but there are some differences that can help tell the two apart:

Allergy symptoms - no fever; clear nasal discharge; scratchy throat; red, watery, itchy, eyes; excessive sneezing; long-term coughing; lasting several weeks to months

Cold symptoms - fever likely, white yellow or green nasal discharge; sore throat; swollen lymph nodes; feeling lethargic or tired; occasional sneezing; short-term coughing; lasting a few weeks

A cold usually lasts 7-10 days. Autumn allergies last a month and come back the same time every year. Mucus is clear with allergies.

I am going through that right now. I am pretty sure that mine is a cold because I have a fever. Allergies do not usually cause a fever until it has become an infection like sinus or respiratory. I would say that is the major difference. There is still sore throat, sneezing, coughing, runny nose and eyes. There are several over the counter medications that can help you if it is allergies or a cold.

My allergist tought me the difference. Colds last 7 - 10 days, and don't occur weekly, maybe once a season. Go to the mirror and pull a bottom eyelid down. Notice the surface - it should be smooth and glossy and pinkish, not red and bumpy. If it's bumpy, you likely have allergies brewing.
