The purpose of religion is to guide us closer to the truth.
You're right: blind faith doesn't make sense. But a lot of people ascribe to this "method" of religion. Here's why I think they do:
Seeking God's truth and developing a closer relationship with Him is hard work that demands analysis of the information you have and a continuous introspection as to what is motivating you. It's majorly hard and sometimes scary work.
People are lazy. So some people take the easy way and call it "blind faith." With that, they think they can avoid the hard work of analysis and introspection. They can just shut their eyes and mumble: "The bible said it, and I believe it. Period."
These people are called fundamentalists.
It's sad to me that so many intelligent people associate fundametalism with Christianity. Fundamentalism is a doctrine that Christ never promoted.

When humans did not know how to explain the phenomena of nature, someone shrewd invented a god and said that God inspired by him. He became the witchdoctor of his tribe and the first mystical cult was born.
A cult is defined as a group of people with a leader who claims that he is inspired by God and where the followers believe every word the leader says.
A religion functions in the same way and has the same purpose. A religion is nothing but a very successful cult.
All cults and religions share the same mystical philosophical premise: Faith in the Supernatural.
It is easier for children to accept answers based on faith than answers based on knowledge. Faith is just a pleasing sentiment which requires no mental effort. Knowledge is the result of study, logical reasoning, experimentation -- all activities which require work, effort, and honesty.

The original purpose of religion is for the people at the top of Church hierarchy to make money from the dumb masses.
Today? Much the same (Ted Haggard, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell - all frauds). I suppose most Christians would say "solving social problems". But this is nonsense, as religion rarely does solve social problems (in fact it often causes them), and secular types are good (if not better) philanthropists too.

At first it was to keep the population united to live in peace and let the government do its thing. Today religion is breaking us apart. Years ago people read the Bible and did not ask questions of the words. Thought they were themselves stupid for not understanding. Today people read and question and find fault. A lot has been discovered over the years that only adds to the suspicions of what is truth or fiction.

The purpose of religion (and this goes back to pre-historic man) is that the idea of god drives abstract thought from which all invention comes. Man unlike all other organic life thinks in terms of good and bad then proceeds to determine what is good and bad and tries to change it. Religion eventually cause conflict and war which drives scientific and technological advance = survival. At this stage of our development religion is necessary and can not stop until humanity acknowledge universal truth - love one another.

The purpose of God's word is to do His will and to prosper us
The purpose of corrupt religion is for somebodies selfish gain
And faith isnt blind;it the substance of things hoped for,and logic can decifer weather or not the thing hoped for was recieved or not and if we correctly did what God wanted to get what we want.

My religion made the person that I am now. Knowing God, believing Him, remaining faithful and obedient to Him is my definition of religion.

religion is your way of explaining the universe and how it came to be and your beliefs on many other things. It is what you hold in your heart. I disagree with the people that say they have no religion too. They may have no Official Religion , but they have decided what to believe in and what not too. They have decided what they hold in their heart and what not to.
The purpose of religion is to explain your beliefs to yourself and to know them for what they are. To explore them and become more knowledgeable about them and add to them.

Set to control the large uneducated masses into believing false prophecies(citing no factual or scientific evidence)
promising heaven(or 79 virgins) whilst instilling morals and character that are deemed acceptable to society through the threat of hell or even eternal death.
Its a pretty good idea.
