This is all about Gifting Etiquette:

As you know kerchiefs are used to wipe away Sweat & Tears suggesting a lot of sadness & frustration. Giving handkerchiefs is taken to mean the giver anticipates the receiver to undergo much crying in the future.

Moreover, it is one of the things associated with those used in funerals.

Well back in my day its was very accepted but now? I think thats gone taboo. You know why? Cause the fact being that NO ONE uses those anymore in this country. Heck fire I got some that are heirlooms that were passed down generations. I just keep them for namesakes only. Shoot if i need to wipe a tear I got either a kleenex or a paper towel and if I dont have that I use my sleeve..LOL (Just for tears) For blowing the old nose I usually have a paper towel or kleenex. Yep those hankies are a day of the past. In funeral homes ,etc . they always have kleenex. Take my word dont be giving any hankies as a present the person receiving will think you have lost what little bit of mind that you had..LOL

Jesus knew what was in store for Him and was not looking forward to it---so to speak. While He was on the cross He even cried out to His Father---Why have You forsaken Me?! At that exact moment, that is when He took on all of the world's sin and the Father could not be in His presence. No, He was enduring something that no other human could fathom. It was a good day in Hell because for those that didn't have a chance to be forgiven had an opportunity while Jesus was there "preaching".

I have received handkerchiefs as a gift from a Japanese woman, and from an American woman. I don't consider them to be making any kind of statement about what I will use them for. Instead, I see it as a gift of a personal item that a person might use on a regular basis, and therefore find helpful.

~ I think for our older generation it is a very nice gift, to give to your mom, or your Aunt, and your Grandmother. They know what a hankerchief is used for, and they make some very pretty ones,,,,,I think it is a very thoughtfull gift. I would not really give it to someone younger than 40 years old,,,they may not be two familiar with a ladies hankerchief.......Hankerchiefs were used but then the disposable kleenex was made ,,,,so the younger generation may not appreciate such a gift.......but I do know many people do collect the ones made a few years back...... I say its a thought ful and pretty gift....

In my culture (African) we give each other our possessions as a way to show your Gratitude to the person you love. In my culture it would mean that you love the person and you care about them. if they ask why you gave them a handkerchief just tell them that when im sad you wipe my tears away, you are always by my side when i need u. LOL (seriously say it, i had just thought of something related to this)

they are common for a wedding or 1st communion but other than that, they usually aren't given unless requested. not that they are taboo or wrong, just that they are kind of a thing of the past. most people don't use them anymore.

If they were used ones with big boogers still in them - then I'd consider that bad & inauspicous!!
