I am just reposting this as a means of more answers.
Saalam alaikum, Muslims and Muslimahs. I will be attending a Masjid today for the first time. I want to muslim people. I don't know any muslims here in Utah, and I just reverted from being kind of catholicish(not really), but anyway.. I know about the dresscode and all I just started covering my head and dressing modestly a few days ago although I don't own muslim wear yet. I am working on that, but my question is what do I need to go there. Do I ask for someone or do I expect that sisters will be around the Masjid? Thank you for all the inputs.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim

Salaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah

I love to be able to greet you as my sister in Islam. May Allah always keep you on the Straight Path, Ameen.

You might call the masjid that you intend to visit. Often they will have someone who is in charge of education, or they will now a sister who would be happy to talk to you and help you get acclimated. You can find out if they have a regular study circle for the sisters - that's what I went to when I first went to the masjid before becoming Muslim. I remember how scared I was, how out of place I felt. When I entered the multi-purpose room I saw all the women there and I froze. Then a lovely, tiny little lady who was leading the class came to me, took me by the hand, and led me to the study circle. Alhamdulillah, she was and is a lovely lady and she is like a mother to me even now.

When you call you can ask what they would prefer you wear, and let them know you don't have any "Muslim attire". I'm sure they'd be happy to loan you something or give you something while you are there.

Please feel free to contact me off Y! with any questions.

Fi Aman Allah,

Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid

i didn't see you asked the question again so in case you don't look back at yoru first question:

as-salaam aleikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Mashallah Mabrook sister on becoming Muslim!! You know, that would be a good idea for you to ask for any sister to come and help you out... but when I went for the first time there were no sisters when I first got there.

I will tell you a bit about my experience going to the masjid the first time... I was SO nervous!!

I had not yet learned how to pray in Arabic yet except for Surah-Fatihah so I already knew I would get confused sometimes but I knew all of the movements in prayer.

Well, there were actually no sisters there and then the Imam came out (the sisters area was upstair where we could see the Imam and the men but they could not see us) and I didn't see any brothers with him.

He started the call to prayer but I didn't know because I thought the call to prayer had to be done outside (it is illegal to do it outside where I lived) so I thought he started prayer and I was standing there with my hands acroos my chest LOL wondering when he would start surah Al-Fatihah.

When he finished I looked down and he was gone so I felt stupid LOL.. I waited about 10-15 minutes and by then a bunch of brothers had come. The Imam came in and was about to start prayers and then a couple sisters came and stood next to me (I didn't even know why they were next to me when there was so much room LOL)

It was the silent prayer so after Surah-Fatihah I was just saying "Alhamdulillah, Subhanallah, Rahmatullah" over and over while the rest were reciting Qur'an to themselves and then I followed the movements. Some things like when we fall in prostration and sit up and go back down again... they did it WAY faster than I had done it so I was having a hard time keep up and was forgetting even what to say in those movements (even the stuff I knew in English). But I went through all of the motions and afterward I felt like I didn't really put all my heart into the prayers since I was forgetful and felt hurried. But afterward just sitting and looking around the masjid made me feel at peace, Mashallah, Alhamdulillah!

inshallah you will have a good experience sister!

As salaamu 'alaikym warmahtullahi wabaraktuh, my sister and friend. Insha'Allah, simply dress with modesty and be polite. I am certain that the other sisters there will assist in any way and manner that they can. Insha'Allah, you will remember all of the salah quickly. The first time I went to the masjid, I had no idea what to do or how to dress, etc. Mash'Allah, the elementary age son of one of the brothers was playing outside. Sheepishly, I asked him what I should do. He smiled and asked if I was a Muslim? I replied that I thought I was. He beamed his smile towards and told me to go in. While there, I was treated as if I was an old family member who had simply been away for a while. Insha'Allah, I am still there. I hope your experience will be as rewarding and comfortable. May Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala, bless you and guide you on the straight path of Islam. ma'a salaam.

salam 3alaikum
al7amdu lellah
going to masjid
i myself being Muslim all my life but did not know how to pray or what to say in my prayers
Ramadan was easy to me that it was simple
no drink
no food
and it was OK can do it
but every day i go to masjid ,but did not pray
day by day year by year
the time mu"azen call for iqamah ,i used to sneak out
some times with tearful eyes
i did not want to ask
it was too much for me
till once i was sitting ,rather a normal person came and started to pray
i looked at him and i thought ,i am really an intellectual person.inteligent.educated,and as long as this simple man can do it
then sure i can
for the first time i watched
simple
easy
so i must know what they say
i went to the evening priors(jahry=loud voice) i got it
i went and looked for a teaching prayers handbook i read it
i got that i learned it right
what i got from the book is wudoo"
and i went the second day i saw people sitting for wudoo"
easy and one by one i copied
then went to pray for the first time in my life
=================================i bringing you the story to realize that you have nothing to worry about
i m sure you will have plenty of pple here ready to help you
i m sure at the masjid you will find so many to help you and give you the right needed ethics and knowledge

Wow, some of these answers are DUMB.

Anyway, u dont need to bring anything. When u go there u should tell a sister ur new to Islam (if they don't notice) and they'll be overjoyed to assist u in anything. U can wear normal (loose) clothing and a scarf, it'll be fine. If u really wanna blend in then wear a skirt or dress or something.

Man, if u lived here, I woulda thrown u a big party!!! Mashallah welcome to Islam sister.

Peace.

I agree with the sister above, just go to the masjid, look for where the other sisters are going in and tell them it is your first time. They will dote on you like you are a superstar, insha'allah!

Welcome home!
