Hi,
My budgie is about 3 months old and she has a hole near the bottom of her beak. What could this be?

She doesn't use her cuttlebone very much, could that be a reason for the hole? Or is the beak overgrown?

She is playful and eating/drinking fine. Nothing else seems to be wrong with her... I touched it and she didn't jerk or seem to be in any pain.

Any advice would be very helpful. Thank you.

All parrots (and budgies) have an open area on the bottom of the lower beak near where it's attached to the face. This is natural.

yes, this can be normal and common for the cere (or noseband) during "teenage" times. but if it is causing discomfort - to your knowledge - then you can have a go at putting some kind of moisturiser on. please dont actually put moisturiser bought from boots on it! Vaseline is ok, but make sure you dont cover the breathing holes. a previous budgie of mine developed beak mites and his cere had lots of little holes forming on it and generally looked a mess. i read about treatments for them in a vet book and it recommended using an oil to cover the holes and it would kill the mites within. so i used some melted butter (knew it would be safe if eaten) and it worked a charm! so feel free to have a go using butter to moisturise the area and see if it improves. and in case you are curious, a brown or fawn coloured cere is generally female, and blue, white, purple or even changing ceres are generally male. but its never a definate way to tell, just a good indicator! I was very embarrassed to have been calling a previous budgie a female for close to 6 years, when a breeder giggled and said... err no! it did explain a lot though!

it was probably caused by mom or dad while they were feeding the baby. It will grow out in time . When she gets a little older she will start playing with toys and using the cuttle bone. If you see discoloration starting around the hole take her to the vet.

What you are decribing is a normal beak formation. You may feel free to send me a picture if you'd like to confirm what you think is NOT normal. But i'm pretty sure it's quite normal.

Congrats on your new bird!!

This could possibly be mites.
If more appear, then that is a sign.

Burrowing mites, a condition called scaly face, can permanently damage a budgie's face.

i wouldn't worry to much the beak continually grows and this will repair its self.
