I had to answer this 'cause our avatars are twins! I don't know any rule of thumb for having good personal boundaries -- depends on how well you know the other person. As a rule you should avoid religion and politics, and keep the comments about the other person's appearance light. I, for example, like a compliment about my outfit but not about my body.

Although some people may not be bothered by that sort of question, try to phrase the question tactfully if you feel the need to ask it.

Ask yourself how you would feel if someone was asking the same question to you about the same situation. If it would make you feel uncomfortable, then don't ask.

I guess I would preface it by saying, "Let me know if I'm out of line by saying this" or "Tell me if what I'm going to say makes you uncomfortable and I'll drop it." And then if someone doesn't want me to go there, I'll apologize.
