I got my little boy a tooth brush set from walmart. It is Thomas the Train and it has a holder, a toothbrush and a little cup. We taught him how to rinse his mouth and spit. But, he was about 27 months. It was the train that did it though- he likes the little cup! Also, he has a stool in the bathroom so he can do it himself.

Now. My kids brushed their teeth over the sink from day one. I got them a stool so they could reach the sink better, and also assisted them - when they were really small, I still had to lift them a bit so they could spit in the sink rather than on the counter, lol.... But I think its best to instill these habits as early as possible. Good luck!

I would say go with what's comfortable. If it works for your son to brush his teeth on the couch for now, good for you for having him just brush his teeth in general! When I was little, I used to sit on the counter, and my older brother would stand on a stool. If either of these interest your son, go ahead and have him start doing that. Maybe you can introduce something new in the morning, and still have him brush his teeth as he has been at night.
Hey, adults brush their teeth in the shower, why does it matter where as long as it's happening?

I always brushed my kids' teeth in the bathroom, either sitting on the counter or standing on a stool when they were a bit bigger. I think the earlier the better, and there is also the benefit of being able to brush your own teeth at the same time, which helps demonstrate good tooth brushing techniques and makes them feel that they are doing a grown-up thing. Good luck!

Hi! I also have a 21 month old(daughter). I have been standing her up at the bathroom sink ever since she was old enough to stand on a step stool(kid friendly) and reach the sink. It was a challenge at first but now she LOVES to spit! I still buy her the oral b baby tooth gel though because she has not grasped the concept of not swallowing yet. So, in answer to your question-start now!

We generally brush in the bathroom. My son is 22 mo. BUT, I pick my battles. I'm just glad he's excited about brushing and if he wants to brush on the front porch, so be it! We use the training toothpaste. He usually hears us brushing and comes in to get his brush, too. Sometimes he even walks around the house brushing. Like I said, I pick my battles. He's my son, not my soldier.
Don't let mean people bother you.
Good luck and best wishes.

I say that if he is tall enough to comfortably stand over the sink with a stepstool, then go for it. That's what my daughter does now at 3 and she loves it. I brush my teeth with her, so it's an "event" for her.
*Funny, the girl above me practically posted the exact same thing!*

Well, my daughter is 4 and I brush her teeth for her. I brush them wherever she is. I don't worry about her spitting because the toothpaste doesn't have fluoride which is harmful if continually swallowed (so I hear). I think you should do it when you are comfortable.

I would say when he's tall enough to reach the sink with a sturdy step stool. Make it one of those "big boy" things when he's ready for it.
