I found a James Gideon Long, Jr in the World War I draft cards who was born June 16, 1875. He was residing in Union county, South carolina at the time the card was written.

Name: James Gideon Long Jr.
City: Not Stated
County: Union
State: South Carolina
Birth Date: 16 Jun 1875
Race: White
Roll: 1877684
DraftBoard: 0
His wife is listed as Caroline Bobo Long. He was a merchant by profession, medium height, medium build, Brown eyes and dark hair.

Assuming this is him, that would mean that his father would have had to have been named James G. Long, sr. If this is the case, I think I may have found them in the 1880 census:

Household:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
James G. LONG Self M Male W 31 SC Farmer KY SC
Lou LONG Wife M Female W 30 SC Keeping House SC SC
James G. LONG Son S Male W 4 SC At Home SC SC
Abel G. LONG Son S Male W 2 SC At Home SC SC
