Jesus... I would like to be listening to Fernando Ortega's song, "Sleepless Night" and hear these lyrics when I lay dying...
Jesus, only light on the shore
Only hope in the storm
Jesus, let me fly to Your side
There I would hide, Jesus

The belief that Jesus Christ indeed paid for my sins and that through Him, I am about to start my true life...my spiritual life! My faith in His promises that I will again, see my beloved family members who have all gone home.

Most importantly, that I will soon look upon His face and I have waited most of my life to do this!

I do not intend to 'lay dying.' This is how it will happen: at long last I'll be cast as the King in a brilliant production of Shakespeare's 'Lear.' In the final performance of a long run in a major Broadway house, at the end of Lear's death scene, I intend to die, actually die. The most believable death scene in the history of the American classical theatre. What 'belief' would matter most to this lifelong atheist? No 'belief' at all but a valiant attempt to remember my bloody lines.

A belief in the mercy of God.....His mercy to me thru Jesus Christ. I would expect to be a recipient of His mercy as I crossed over to the other side. I would be counting on it.

What would matter to me the most is my belief that I'm merely making a transition on my way to eternal life.

Lay dying what?

Oh, you must mean LIE dying.

The belief that you have carried with you would probably be the one that matters the most to you at that moment.

I want to die knowing that I'm saved by the blood shed by Jesus Christ on calvary. I know that with him as my savior, I will go to Heaven after I die and live forever with him eternally.

That my family knows I'll be looking forward to seeing them soon.

And hopefuly I'll be going with a smile on my lips. And hopefully it will be a death with significance.
