Just tell him. Just say hey babe, I have noticed lately that you have some dragon breath. What have you been eating. He is your husband, why would you worry about hurting him, he knows you love him. If you had something in your teeth, wouldn't you want him to tell you!

This is what I did: I bought some flavored floss & new toothbrushes for both of us. And a new brand of mouthwash.
Waited a while (a week or so) ... no change ....
Made a dentist appointment for him for a good checkup & a cleaning, & made a doctor appointment for him.
I called the doctor's office w/the reason for the checkup: halitosis.
He was a little miffed that I did such a thing, but I told him later (**getting forgiveness afterwards is usually easier than permission beforehand**) that I love him very much & want to see him around and healthy for a long long time! Then he was ok with it ...
Other than onions/garlic/alcohol & smoking, the following are reasons for halitosis:
Dental problems. Poor dental hygiene and periodontal disease can be a source of bad breath. If you don't brush and floss daily, food particles remain in your mouth, collecting bacteria and emitting hydrogen sulfur vapors. A colorless, sticky film of bacteria (plaque) forms on your teeth. If not brushed away, plaque can irritate your gums (gingivitis) and cause tooth decay. Eventually, plaque-filled pockets can form between your teeth and gums (periodontitis), worsening this problem — and your breath. Dentures that aren't cleaned regularly or don't fit properly also can harbor odor-causing bacteria and food particles.
Dry mouth. Saliva helps cleanse and moisten your mouth. A dry mouth enables dead cells to accumulate on your tongue, gums and cheeks. These cells then decompose and cause odor. Dry mouth naturally occurs during sleep. It's what causes "morning breath." Dry mouth is even more of a problem if you sleep with your mouth open. Some medications as well as smoking can lead to a chronic dry mouth, as can a problem with your salivary glands.
Diseases. Chronic lung infections and lung abscesses can produce very foul-smelling breath. Several other illnesses can cause a distinctive breath odor. Kidney failure can cause a urine-like odor, and liver failure may cause an odor described as "fishy." People with uncontrolled diabetes often have a fruity breath odor. Chronic reflux of stomach acids from your stomach (gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) and a slight protrusion of the stomach into the chest cavity (hiatal hernia) also can produce bad breath.
Mouth, nose and throat conditions. Bad breath is also associated with sinus infections because nasal discharge from your sinuses into the back of your throat can cause mouth odor. Strep throat, tonsillitis and mononucleosis can cause bad breath until the throat infection clears. Bronchitis and other upper respiratory infections in which you cough up odorous sputum are other sources of bad breath. Canker sores may be related to bad breath, especially if they accompany periodontal disease.
Good luck to you both.

Just suggest that he needs to have a check up to see why he has an odd or bad odor. You would be doing him a favor. He may have a medical problem.
Put yourself in his place. If you had this problem would you want him to say something or let you go on with an offensive odor and possibly a medical problem.

how have you survived as a couple long enough to get married WITHOUT being able to offer honest feedback to him.
YOU are his mirror he should be able to rely on you to tell him if he has forgotten to shave or if his tie doesnt work with that shirt or if he has bad breath. You don't want him going out into the world to embarass himself.
think of not telling him as letting him down in that capacity
But also if he loves you he should be thinking of your feelings. I still brush and rinse immediately before getting intimate with my partner after 8 years. I also make sure i have a shower I wouldnt want to take him for granted.

He's your husband.. someone you're supposed to be with for the rest of your life, so you need to get over the communication problem!
If I were you, I'd just say.. honey, don't take this the wrong way, but your breath smells gross right now. Here have a mint.
Also suggest that he start brushing his tongue really well, and if the problem persists, he may need to see a doctor.

Just say...
"Honey...I don't mean to be mean, but...
"You've really gotta stop putting all that Tabasco Sauce on your fish...What? You didn't use Tabasco Sauce, and you didn't have fish for lunch?"
"Well, then...I suggest you start doing so...because right now you're breath is worse than that...Capiche?!?"
"But I still love you, dear..." (and then pat him on the head like the good little doggie he is, and give him a Milkbone Dog Biscuit)
(that should get the message across without being mean)

HE is your husband, you have sex with him and you can't tell him his breath stinks?
Be honest and,"babe I love you very much but you need to use some mouth wash and chew gum. Your breath is so bad it's like something crawled up in your mouth died and was burried there. You are going to drive people away."

Just tell him. If he's your husband you should be able to talk about anything. I always tell my bf if he has old-man breath and vice-versa. If you prefer to take a more subtle approach make a dental appointment for both of you for a general check up and cleaning, buy new electric toothbrushes for you both and banish garlic from your household!

you can tell your husband in a nice way. you can say:
" Dear, I am not trying to be mean or anything, but your mouth has a bad odor. you should brush your teeth. thanks honey."
after you say this, kiss the husband with a loving lip.
