McPherson Square, Farragut West, and Farragut North are correct, as far as distance, but here are a couple of other possibilities.

McPherson Square is the closest.
Farragut West's 17th Street entrance is closed late at night and on Weekends, which means you have an extra block or two to walk.

Metro Center is almost as close as Farragut North. If you are coming on the Red Line FROM Glenmont, it might be your best choice. The Walk from Metro Center (about 3-4 blocks depending on which exit you get off of) can go up Pennsylvania Avenue, which is a nice way to approach the White House.

Federal Triangle Station lets you off just north of the Mall, you can come to the White House via the "Back Door", from the Ellipse. Another good approach for putting the building in context.

Don't forget to visit Lafayette Square, across the street.

The Vermont Avenue exit at McPherson Square (Blue and Orange lines) actually says that is the stop and exit to use for the White House.
