My great grandfather came here from Sligo, Ireland.
He dug ditches, worked in factories.
In those days "Welfare" was "you don't work, you don't eat."
Don't worry, illegal aliens won't starve when they go back to their own countries.

This is no longer a great country and Europeans stopped coming in great numbers years ago. The broad Hispanic spectrum, Oriental influx and third world countries have taken their place to some extent...if they would only let them! There is no country, outside of England, that has not suffered the wrath of the "American" people when they came to these shores. The Irish, Italians, Germans, Russians and many more people from other countries were relegated to the cheap seats back then just as Hispanics are now. It truly is a disgusting state of affairs when Americans, who all have an ethnic history, can turn so quickly on those who still wish to come here.

They had to have references of their character, arrest records from their country, and proof that they could support themselves with a skill that was needed here. They also had to travel by ship for weeks and get medical exams (which had to be passed), de-loused, and immunized. Lots of them starved during the trip or died from disease. They also had to prove they were not alcoholic or mentally unstable.

A lot of Europeans still come to the US. Mostly they won't due to crappy healthcare here, though, and no protection if you lose your job.

Many starved to death, many were killed.....what exactly do you want to know? They were raped and slaughtered and died of diseases they weren't accustomed to, scalped, had hard times, changed their names and did what they had to do to survive in a foreign country. Without freebies and a sense of entitlement or guarentees of success.

I came, was very disappointed and left.

The US is a faith based society, not a knowledge based. I do not belong there.
