The Church took a firmer stand against heresy back then, just as the civil courts took a much harsher stance. A civil court of that time would hang a man for stealing a chicken. In Galileo's case, the Church imposed a fairly benign sentence - house arrest at the opulent Mediterranean villa of his best friend - for his published comment that the universe might operate strictly by natural forces, without the direct involvement of God.

The Church officially apologized and admitted Galileo was right.
In 1992.
In 1992, they officially acknowledged that the earth does, indeed, revolve around the Sun.

The church finally admitted they were wrong about Galileo. They still have not apologized for burning Giordano Bruno at the stake though.

I believe Pope John Paul II apologized for that, as well as for the crusades, and the host of other wrongs in Christian history. Sure it took too long, but hey that's the current position. They didn't take nearly as long to adopt his ideas as they did to apologize for what that's worth...
Peace to you.
