Animals eat dirt because they need minerals. It seems weird, but our neighbor lady ate dirt when she was pregnant--people and animals know what they need.

Our dog ate dirt and rocks and the vet determined it was Pica caused by anemia (thus missing important minerals in his diet). We ended up changing his food and adding a supplement (they sale in pet stores) he no longer does it.

Be really careful, we ended up at the vet because he swallowed some small rocks that were blocking his intestines. He could pass them and could have died (the operation to remove the rocks costs $3,000). Luckily he passed most of them after 2 days in the hospital after numerous IV's ect.

Moral of the story, get him to a vet asap to see what's up. In the interim if he is focused on one area, take pepper and sprinkle it over the dirt (especially red pepper flakes). The smell will deter him until you can get him in for a checkup. Good luck.

OMG My dog just did the same thing so we threw her in the pool. She dug a hole like 4 feet wide and 2 feet deep and its all over her mouth and paws. I dont know how to stop it other than taking her out back on a leash

He might get infected, so I'd rather keep it away from the dirt.
