"Give me your tired, your poor
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The Statue of Libery gives no reference to legal or illegal immigrants. We all see what we want to see don't we?

We so soon forget.
The difference is between legal and illegal immigration. The rights written in the Constitution and supported by the laws of the land, due process, protection under the law, free speech, etc. are for...and pay close attention now...
CITIZENS!!!!!
If someone is here illegally, they are NOT citizens, only visitors and/or occupants.
Don't expect to be protected by the same rights the CITIZENS enjoy.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French to the New American nation. It's not a "law", blazoned upon the statue, contrary to popular opinion, but a poem called The New Colossus which was added to the poem years later.

I haven't forgotten this "poem" any more than "annabelle lee" but I don't think that this short work of art has much to do with illegal aliens at all.

USA cannot roll out the welcome mat for ALL the unhappy inhabitants in every 3rd world country across the globe.

Try this:

1. Sneak across the border without our government's knowledge and minus a passport, cash or ID of any kind.

2. Find an employer that will hire you for a low wage since you have no education or job training skills to offer. Steal a SS card or make up a #. Better yet, don't pay taxes on money earned. This way you're not on record as having an income and can get welfare.

3. Demand they speak SPANISH.

4. Demand they give you FREE food, LOW income housing, ER health care and educate your half dozen kids~for FREE indefinitely.

5. Break more of their driving laws by buying a car and driving it without paperwork or insurance.

When this is all done, tell that country you don't wish to become a Citizen but expect that their government will support you for as long as you say. NEVER assimilate, NEVER speak their language, and ONLY Respect their customs and laws if it means you get more freebies while you "Work Hard" to get YOUR Piece of the Pie that you feel THE USA OWES YOU.
^

Then wonder WHY their Citizens want you OUT!
Getting the picture??

The statue of liberty clearly didn't say give me your illegal immigrants and I am certain that the Greenwich village poetess who entered the contest with the community group that put up that poem did not have illegal immigrants in mind. Nor did the benefits being drained today exist at that time.

However, it is not legislative action, and while true of our history, doesn't necessarily make it true of our future. Cummulative numbers and strained resources matter.

We have laws in this country. They are meant to be upheld. If you want to come to this country, and live, do so legally. Those words you just posted are not forgotten. The words 'E Plurbius Unum,' 'From Many, One.' We are a melting pot, and any immigrant coming to the USA, to live, should take the steps to be a legal citizen. What is so wrong about that??? I have no problem with immigrants coming here, my ancestors did, BUT, they came here, and became citizens. Either live here legally, or go back home. The issue is about being here "LEGALLY."

The Statue of Liberty gives no reference to legal or illegal immigrants and it also doesn't give any reference to terrorists ,so we now are suppose allow terrorists to enter America at will, since you want to use the argument no reference to legal or illegal immigrants that anybody from any where, only need to walk into country without any oversight or background checks. The Statue of Liberty gives no reference to legal or illegal immigrants who are human smugglers or drug dealers either. We welcome them too? What you are saying is, America should just become one big nation of lawlessness

No, I don't think we have forgotten. We have laws that people must abide by if they want to come to our Country. They can still do it legally; the problem arises when people are coming here illegally and are using our resources to pay their way; we are paying for their health costs, housing, cost of keeping criminals in our prisons who are here illegally, and much more. I am not against having people come here but it should be done legally. I am tired of having the illegals have more benefits than I have and for which I am paying.

The Statue of Liberty isn't the law. The Statue also did not say, we will give you free health care, tuition to colleges, free school and lots of other goodies and you can violate our laws.

Your right. You see one thing and I see another.

What it doesn't mean is come and break our laws, disrespect our way of life. It doesn’t mean steal and cheat my citizens. It doesn’t mean we should be forced to speak your language.

What it means is work hard, follow our laws, and respect us for who we are and what we stand for. Follow our laws, speak our language. Don’t forget freedom comes at a price, be prepared to pay it, many people have paid for the freedom you wish, some with their lives. Be willing to pay with your life if necessary for the freedom we share.

If you are willing to do that, then you who are poor can become rich. Rich in many more ways then you can dream of. If you are homeless, you can find a home here, a home where you can build a better life for yourself and your children.

So no we haven’t forgotten, but many people have forgotten the freedom comes with a price and many aren’t willing to pay that price.

No. But just like you as an individual can't save every poor person....neither can any government care for every poor person of the world.

You do what you can....but you can't be expected to FIX it for everybody.

That's like taking a beautiful piece of poetry you wrote and making it a mandate for everyone.
