Ancient Arab people were vedic or Hindu people. They used to be called Pagans. Kaaba was the main temple of vedic/pagan people of ancient Arab. The temple was having 360 idols of god/goddess signifying each day of the year. It also had a black "Shivaling" and an octagonal structure containing the foot-print "charan" of Brahma.
When mohammad captured Mecca, he destroyed all 360 idols. But even he could not destroy the 'shivling' and the octagonal structure containing the foot-print of Brahma.
At that time, the main god of Pagan's was the moon god and its name was 'Al-ilah'. Being the main god of that time, Muhammed could not force people not to worship the moon god. At the same time he wanted himself to be worshipped like a god so he declared himself a prophet and the messengar of god.

It is really strange to know that the holiest place of Muslims 'Kaaba' which if a muslim visit once in his life time, is supposed to go to Jannat, even that was a temple and was forcefully captured by Mohammad and his army.

Even in many muslims countries, this truth is being taught to the students that Kaaba temple was having 360 idols and all destroyed by Mohammad

Also one can see the wikipedia, it also says Kaaba temple was having 360 idols, all destroyed by Mohammad:

Predominantly pagan with large groups of Jews and Christians.

The Ka'aba was in fact a shrine that housed many idols before Mohammed violently took over.

They were Jewish or Pagans. These people were all put to the sword later by Mohammed's followers (previously non-Palestinian Jews) for not converting to Islam.
