I currently take Depakote (1000mg) for headaches and Abilify (10mg) for something vague. The doctor never really told me what it's for specifically, but I think it's for paranoia and perhaps schitzophrenia. Shortly after starting the Abilify, I became very sleepy. I would sleep 9 or so hours a day and still be groggy. The doc cut my dose in half for a week for my body to adjust, and it helped for a while. Now, though, I'm sleeping 10-12 hours and usually fall asleep during class or end up taking a nap on days I don't have class. It seems that Abilify causes insomnia, but I've got just the opposite, and I'm wondering if it could be the Abilify anyways. Thanks in advance.

Abilify is an antipsychotic medicine. I've taken it, but I've never felt sleepy because of it. I think this is one you probably need to discuss with your doctor, since it is affecting your sleep, and, with going to school, this will affect your schoolwork.

The whole idea about treating a mental illness is that it should allow you to live a more normal life. Demand it. Ask questions until you get answers you understand from your doctor. Remember that you are paying him to do a job, not the other way around. You deserve results.

Get a printout of the possible side effects of Abilify from your pharmacist. That way you will know for sure what to watch for.

I take Abilify 10 mg for schizophrenia with no side effects. It put my illness into remission for 4 years now.

Personally Abilify made me unbearably restless and they say it is more stimulating than other similar medications. But, meds can have the opposite effect. My step daughter and one other person I know both found Abilify extremely sedating.

You really need to talk to your doctor. You should know exactly what you are taking and why. Abilify is an antipsychotic...although you don't have to be completely delusional for it to be helpful. If you have schizophrenia, that is something you really need to know. I can not imagine any doctor would not inform you of that diagnosis...that is a very serious illness that needs to be treated carefully...I would certainly hope that it isn't schizophrenia and your dr isnt telling you.
Seriously though...talk to the dr...it is very important that you know exactly what your meds do and why you are taking them. Do not put blind faith in doctors...they are not gods...they do not know it all ...some are great but some are awful...you have to look out for yourself.

I have taken both and the Depekote made me very tired, I now am on 20mg of abilify and I don't have any severe side effects. I like it so far it can cause restlessness, and sleppiness it just depends on you. I think its more or less the Depekote though. You can check the side effects of both meds on WebMD.com.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using Abilify and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
*fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats;
*jerky muscle movements you cannot control;
*sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body;
*sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;
*increased thirst, frequent urination, excessive hunger, or weakness;
*feeling light-headed, fainting; or
*urinating less than usual or not at all.
Continue taking Abilify and talk to your doctor if you have any of these less serious side effects:
*dizziness, drowsiness, or weakness;
*constipation;
*nausea, vomiting, upset stomach;
*headache, anxiety;
*sleep problems (insomnia); or
*weight gain.

I really don't know but they put my grandson on 2mg and the pharmacy made a mistake and gave him 20mg and it put him in the hospital (3 different ones matter of fact the first 2 couldn't help him so he was transported by ambulance a hour and a half away to a childrens hospital) for 3 days he drooled and every muscle in his body looked like it was crawling and he would scream with pain ..It was very bad ..But in your case I don't know , but I don't like it at all but of course it wasn't the doctors fault and the 2mg may have helped but now his mom won't let him take it at all..Sorry I couldn't help you though I just wanted to share that with you..

When you pick-up your prescriptions at the pharmacy
there is paperwork that comes with the medication.
Read your paperwork, it will list possible side effects.
--or--
call your pharmacist and ask. He had a large book of all medications and can look it up.
