Are you born an atheist or do you become an atheist?

I think that atheism is a choice people make. In some cases it's highly influenced by society, or at least the society in which the person comes in contact. In other cases it is based on a more academic belief in rationalism or a belief that all things are determinable and logical and that things that are not provable with scientific principles do not exist or at least have no consequence.

In the first case, by society, I mean his family and friends, neighbors and the folks who appear on the television and in publications. Seeing a boatload of acquaintances who claim to be Christian, yet never go to church, or go grudgingly, act no different, or in some cases with much worse moral standards than he does, seem to prosper by cheating or lying or otherwise defrauding their fellow man, leads some to believe there is no God.

The academic view is that man can reason out this universe and it is unreasonable to assume that there is a God when all the things that happen in the universe can be explained purely on the basis of scientific principles and laws. If you need to believe in a God it is because you have not the reasoning power to explain the universe without having to stoop to the level of mythological fantasy.

That's how I see it.

It depends on the person.

I think that atheists vary as much as Christians do.

Some atheists are born into a religious home, and either rebel against it, or find "evidence" that convinces them there is no God.

Others are NOT born into religious homes, and just have no need to search for a God. Or, they are former agnostics who didn't find any evidence for there being a God.

Some become atheists because of anger against hypocritical members of religion. Others because they think science proves there is no God.

And there are so many other things that "drive" a person to atheism.

I don't think people are driven to atheism...they just make a choice not to believe. It is called free will. No one ever just becomes an atheist..it is a choice. Some children brought up in atheist homes, later become Christians. We all get a chance to choose. If you are sincerely looking for the truth, you will find it, if you think you already have it because of your superior intellect,,,then you won't.

Religion is in many cases what drives people to atheism. Because religion is a system of DO THIS or that to please God and it becomes an endless burden.
True faith in God, according to the Bible alone, sets people free from the endless performance burden, because when they realize all that Jesus has DONE for them they can finally be FREE to enjoy life and a RELATIONSHIP with their Creator.

On the other hand, everyone is born an atheist and God-hater naturally, because we are all born rebels against God. But the amazing thing is that Jesus loved us enough to die for our rebellion and make it possible for us to be reconciled to a living RELATIONSHIP with God.

"You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the UNGODLY.
Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.For if, when we were GOD'S ENEMIES, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!"

You are born an atheist if youre parents are atheist.
But good atheist parents also let you choose if you want to have a faith when youre old enough.

Someone becomes an atheist when they find it hard to believe in something. Me, i questioned myself" people devote their whole life to some one who theyve never even seen"
and in the end , what if there is no one?

also " WHO CREATED THE WORLD?? AND IF THAT GUY CREATED THE WORLD,WHO CREATED HIM,AND WHO CREATED THE OTHER GUY?? IT JUST GOES ON FOREVER!!

People try and be good and waste time on religion. just to be at heaven in the next life. But what if there isnt a next life. What if all u did devoting to religion was just a waste??

I believe life should be led to the full. and be seized every day.
Because u never when it finishes!

Those sort of questions could lead someone to atheism

I'm an atheist.

I was driven to become an atheist because I don't see the point of wasting this life on trying to get to another life.

Use the life we have and make it as GOOD as possible.
Religion only takes up precious time that should be spent on more important things.
If we spend a lifetime doing what we can for the next lifetime, we've wasted a lifetime.

I'm not trying to convert anyone, or say religion is wrong, I'm just telling you why I am an atheist.

I would say that people are not born atheist, but become atheist and mainly because of hypocrisy in the church.
As for me I am not going to let other people's behaviour change my decision to live for the Lord.

every baby born is born a natural Atheist with no concepts of gods or religion. then the child is indoctrinated into whatever religion their parents adheres to. a person may later choose to become an Atheist when it becomes apparent to them that they've been conditioned to believe in a cultural myth and a dogma that their educated intelligence can no longer reconcile with facts they know to be true.

We are all ignorant when we are born. If that is your definition of atheism, then yes they are atheists. But I have never seen a baby come out and declare, "There is no God" or "there is a God!".

I think what brings them to atheism is them not receiving signs of the existence of a God, i.e. unanswered prayers. Otherwise they may disbelieve in God out of rebellion, i.e. their parents believed in God and so they rejected God because of their views toward their parents, or (as was in my case for a time) something bad happened (i.e the death of a loved one) and they felt "if there was a God, he wouldn't have let this happen" so they either hate God or deny his existence.
