I think it's because they were usually served with meals where you would have butter and bread.

You can make a sandwich out of the pickles on bread and butter. The only difference between B and B pickles and sweet pickles is the amount of sugar. Theres a little more sugar in sweet pickles and the sweet pickles are usually whole and smaller. Band B's are almost always sliced.
