There are ways to avoid the DC Beltway. But they involve roads with red lights and aren't generally a quicker alternative.
But here is one you can try. After you cross the Bay Bridge, take 301 South into Virginia. Once in Virginia follow the signs to I-95 south. Take I-95 South to I-295 West to I-64 West. This will connect with I-81 near Staunton.

I'm not entirely sure what constitutes, "eastern shore of MD", but 270/70 will avoid the Beltway, keep in mind that it will take you North before you hit 81 to go South.
Another option is to get through DC and onto 66 West in Virginia - - - again, not sure exactly where you are so this could put you right smack into the beltway.
Good Luck.

As awful as the DC Beltway is, I think it's going to be your most expedient route to 81. You'd be on the beltway for about 30 miles and I'd prefer that to driving on Rt 50 through DC. If it's possible, try to plan your trip so that you are on the beltway between the rush hours - after 9:30 AM and before 3 PM on weekdays. Good luck.

You can take 50 to 301 into VA and on down to Richmond where you get on 295 to 64 to 81. It would probably be quicker just to brave the beltway if you can time it to miss rush hour.

i agree with H.a.v.o.c why would you need to get on the beltway?? My cousin went to umd easter shore and when we visited we never took the beltway.
take route 50 west into dc, follow it thru the city to downtown and then hop on I66 west. It will take you straight to 81 (i have family in max medows va close to roanoke and we take 66 straight to 81 when going).
hope this works for you. good luck and happy traveling.

Why would you need to get on the beltway.
You can go right through the middle of town if you like.
In on 50/New York Ave, to downtown, across the river, and out on 66.
Don't know if this is what you were looking for.
You could also go up 97 to MD32 to I-70 to Frederick, 340 to 81.
Good luck.
