We do not have any phone jacks in our home (have been exclusively using cell phones for 5+ years) and now are interested in getting VOIP - is a phone jack necessary?

You've made a wise choice...the base-phone connects directly to the modem/and/or/router( whatever you got?)
then all you need is several phone extensions (up to 10)...and just plug them into an electrical outlet...no more phone jacks!!!
the regular phone has a RJ-11 plug.....and the VoIP phone have a RJ-45.....make sure to look at the back of a phone you buy....must be a VoIP phone, unless you get a ATA ( analog phone adopter)....

you do not need phone jacks, if you are going to be happy with having the phone, or main base for an expandable handset cordless phone right next to where your cable modem is.
cable company provided VoIP is the best choice, for call quality.
the ATA is part of the cable modem itself, they will replace the cable modem that you have and you will plug your phone directly into the phone port on the back of the modem..

No. Your cable is providing your phone service. You'll have to plug a little box into your modem or hub, and then you'll plug your regular phone plug into the socket in that little box.
