I've been waiting for months for councelling sessions to start on the NHS, but I'm getting a bit frustrated at the wait - it's not easy to deal with depression and having to muddle through day to day, sometimes I really don't feel I can cope.

I wanted to know how much private councelling costs on average, to see it it is a viable option.

counselling on average can cost anywhere in the region of £30 - £50 a session, go to the www.bacp.co.uk website for a list of bonafide private counsellors in your area, little secret some private counsellors may have some low cost spaces available if you are financially restricted.

Average is $110 per hour for a psychiatrist and $ 60 to $80 for a psychologist and about $40 to $80 for a counselor. But most larger cities have a pastoral counseling and consultation center that does it on a pro rated for what you can afford. It is non-denominational and not preaching churchy stuff but actual counseling. If you have insurance they pay about 80 percent so if you got someone foe $100, insurance pays $80 and you pay $ 20. If you are really in need of help go to the emergency room and they will admit you for 2 to 7 days and that gets you a priority at NHS when you get out. If it does not, then go back to emergency and tell them this time that you need a counselor every week or every two weeks and that NHS is dragging their feet. Be persistant and take charge. Some of these people are lazy and like to see only two or three patients a day when in an eight hour day they should see eight one hour sessions or 16 1/2 hour sessions. Make them take care of you and tell them you need help and stay on them or they slack off and treat you bad as they are public employees mostly there just to get paid for as little work as possible.

Look up counseling in phonebook or internet for your area in my exp medication is more helpful then counseling for depression and here in us regular dr can prescribe such pills ( i take lexapro ) which at least might make you feel better while waiting and maybe make you feel better with or without therapy

Also when u say nhs i assume england but repost with more specifics cause someone may know of counselors in your area and may have been to them and be able to tell u prices and quality. I say this because while good counseling is great
i have worked in mental health field long enough to know that at least over here some people become counselors with out any knowledge or decencey that said the majority are good and a couple have helped me as well so just be cautious

feel free to contact me if u would like cheers

The rates vary. You have to be very careful, there are a lot of fraudsters out there.
Have you thought about contacting Mind? They are a mental health charity and may be able to point you in the right direction.
Hope this helps; true clinical depression is so debilitating. People do not realise this. Wish you all the best and hope you can find the help you need to see the light at the end of the tunnel. X

I don't know for sure but I have heard $120 - $150 an hour. You could call around and see if you could find a place that will bill you on a sliding scale according to your income. Do you have insurance? Does it cover counseling? I understand what you are going through. You get on a wait list and what are you to do in the meantime?? Good luck to you

Since you mention NHS, I presume you are in the UK like myself. I have been on the waiting list as well since April, and was told it's normal for someone to wait up to a year before they are seen.

When I was still living in London, my therapist's rate was £45 for one session. I am sorry you feeling down. If you go back to your GP and explain to them maybe they'll write to the psycho-therapy service and fast-track you?

I had to give up private therapy because of the cost. I work as a language tutor in University and I can barely pay the rent for my council flat.

If you are in the UK I think the going rate is about £50 per hour. Why don't you ring up a few from the Yellow Pages to get an idea. Ask your Doctor to get the NHS to pull their finger out.

It costs from $135 to $150 an hour for a phychiatrist and less for a psychologist. Sounds like you need a psychiatrist so he can prescribe an anti-depressant. I take Wellbutrin 300 mg and my symptoms are in remission for 4 years now.

I see a clinical psychologist. I pay a $15 co-pay. Without insurance it would be $120 for a 45 minute session.

About 60+ dollars for your 50 minute session.
