A religion is a belief in a power outside of the control and destiny of humanity. To that extent, atheism (refusal to accept any theology) cannot be a religion. That is not to say that an atheist cannot adopt a moral and righteous stance. See my short article on Understanding the Psychology of Atheism for a little more of where I am coming from:

Good question...
A "CULT", is a way of life, a following of something like in fashion , or art, yet too can mean other things as a religious following by definition. ( short definition of )
"Occult", is a belief in Satanic things..
So, if Atheism is a belief in NOT believing in religion , God or Deity , especially in Christ.
Is that a Religion..?..
Is it a CULT?.. way of life?
for some yes, it is very much so.
but like the saying goes: "there are few Atheist's in fox holes" when the tests of life are before them so close to death. I have had a near death experience. I do not question the validity of God, for i know without certain there is one!
I have known those who said they were Atheists. I found it was more over they hadn't found in them yet the wanting to accept they might have accountability for their behaviors to a higher authority, or had something horrible happen they couldn't understand the nature as not being intervened to not happen if there was supposedly a God as others believe.
I think anything can be a religion where there are enough people who want to believe and follow a certain doctrine of beliefs or non beliefs.
This isn't always the reason for most, but i have found for many. Other people seem to shy away from what they don't understand, and fear.. Then ridicule, or try to destroy, rather than have a heart of love and understanding, they have a free right just as any to belief or not to.
I just pray they first consider that any religion should be for the good of mankind, not to destroy it..
I believe firmly that religion in essence is found within the heart and soul of mankind. That which motivates us, gives us a compass of rights and wrongs.
That too ,the mind tries to perceive things to an understanding of events. logic's.
We have had "In God we trust" and our "Pledge of allegiance" , Christmas displays etc. removed or challenged by individuals not believing in.. are they atheists?.. non believers?.. do they not as others have affect on the many?
just as believers do in too making laws..
A believer of anything, must have their own personal definition of Faith within them, that Cult of how they live.
Debate the what if's, is it, religion or not forever..
What are we each doing with our faith, our convictions?
What effect is it playing on our family, our community, our nation.. ?
no matter our skin color, nationality or faith.. We need to come together rather than separate , we all live on this planet together. It's about time we got it together..

Atheism is the lack of belief in gods or the belief that no gods exist. We're not a uniform group. We're not even a group at all.

There is no uniform belief system attached to atheism.

However, atheism has influenced philosophies such as secular humanism.

By definition atheism is NOT considered a religion.

A religion is a set of common beliefs and practices generally held by a group of people, often codified as prayer, ritual, and religious law. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction

Atheism is a belief kept sustained on self-deception against the pressure of a nagging belief in favor of the existence of God.

This has been narrated to me as having taken place some 20 years ago in Africa. A commercial plane was set to land on its belly because the wheels could not be unlocked. The control tower had a second thought after the fuel was jettisoned: the airport was not safe for belly-landing.It was suicidal. There was no fuel left for another airport

There was among the passengers, a size-able group of those who were atheists from a communist country contracted for a railway line laying project. All were warned of the distinct danger and fear of loss of lives. They were asked to keep praying during the landing process.

The atheists too joined in the chorus of making great sound like prayers. When asked after the miraculous successful landing what they were saying in their prayers, they said they kept pleading: "Please! Please!". To whom? "To the aircraft, of course, and it complied"

Self deception against the nature of mankind, is what atheism is - it is a fashion - an elite know better group.

No it's the absence of one. Calling atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color or off a TV channel.

Based on the definition of religion I would say no, though there are a few fanatics who probably fit into the only definition of the word that doesn't require supernatural or a leader.

No.

First definition of religion on Google Definitions: 'a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny'

Atheists do not believe in supernatural powers that control human destiny, so they are not religious.

Atheism is a faith. It takes faith to believe that something doesn't exist because it's impossible to prove non-existence.

I know that atheists do not consider themselves to be participating in any form of religion.

To me it seems a religion in which they worship and exalt man rather than God.
