It won't kill him but you should never give your child milk because it's so thick it will coat the mucus making it hard for it to be released so therefore causing your child to have a cold longer if you can give him orange juice this helps the mucus will come out good and his cold will go away quicker.

this was the answer in Yahoo health
"Phlegm is the thick, sticky mucus that drips down the back of your throat when you have a cold. Although drinking milk may make phlegm thicker and more irritating to your throat than it would normally be, milk doesn't cause your body to make more phlegm. Frozen dairy products are an easy way to soothe a sore throat and provide calories to an ill child who otherwise may not eat."

There is evidence that dairy based products can increase mucus, particularly during coughs and colds, but truthfully these sickness's have to run their course and if he likes milk I would still let him have it.

if his cough is that often then you should talk to his dr. about it.
when my son has a cough i don't give him milk cause it makes the mucus thicker in his throat and he gets choked up on it.
so no i don't give him milkif he is sick i will give him juice, but mostly water, he loves water anyway so it's not that hard to give it to him.

first of all milk has at least 75 chemicals in it and at least cause cancer...never mind coughing...so if milk is a choice then organic is better...but when mucus is present then hold off on the milk...
soy silk is better either way since even with organic milk the pastureizing kills too many good things anyway...
soy milk is better especially for you too...

Your mother-in-law is right. Call your pediatricians office and ask the nurse. She will confirm this to be true.
