He'll be fine, don't worry! Your vet has probably done this hundreds of times. They make a small incision, pull the testes out and snip, snip, a stitch, and it's all over. The dog will be under general anesthesia and won't feel a thing. He may be a little groggy from the anesthesia when he wakes up, but pain is minimal. It's impossible to know for sure I guess, but usually you'd never know anything was done. It's a little more invasive procedure for females, but you just have to make sure they don't overdo activities. Be glad you're doing it, it proves you're a responsible owner doing the best thing for your pet--it is truly one of the best things you can do for his long term health! Good luck!

He will be fine and a better dog for you doing it.

He will go into surgery, be anesthetized, his belly will be shaved (if necessary) and the doctor will make a SMALL incision in his testicles, pull the vas deferens and snip it. Or he will just pull the entire vas deferens out and snip it off at the end. The testicles are removed too. Then he will put a stitch (maybe) in the testicles and send him to recovery. He will probably not even know anything has happened. But he will be less aggressive during mating season, he will roam less and be very loving, happy and healthy.

Thank you for neutering you dog.

Oh and just for the record, my Catahoula DID have a vasectomy because his "dad" wanted to keep his testicles for whatever reason. So don't assume that everyone does the same thing with their pets as you do TORBAYNEWFS!! You stand corrected!

The first person is clueless!!! They do not do a VASECTOMY!!!! A neuter is a CASTRATION!!! They make an incision and remove both testicles!!!!! Stitch up and go! It is done all the time and has been done for a long time!! Safe and effective and good for the dog!!!!!!

catzrme...YOU stand corrected!! The poster asked about NEUTERING. NEUTERING is NOT a vasectomy. If you had a clue, you would know that. Yes, you can get a vasectomy, but it is called a vasectomy..not a NEUTER and 99.99999% of the population do not get the dog a vasectomy. When someone actually asks about a vasectomy, feel free to respond. This person asked about a neuter and you gave INCORRECT info. Deal with it.

see them.

And this is just some general information.

We got our little guy neutered a few weeks ago and he is just fine now. He was a little in shock and in pain after the surgery but he recovered quickly. He was really groggy when we picked him up and he didnt want to drink or eat. Though he may love a treat towards the evening. Also if they offer to include narcotics to help the dog deal with the pain I suggest go ahead and accept because narcotics help them with the pain. Also do not let him climb stairs for a week after wards and follow all of the directions that the vet gives you. You will be just fine and so will your little guy. Good Luck!

Most dogs come through the neuter surgery absolutely fine, and yours almost certainly will, too. Ask the vet or vet-tech to explain the procedure to you (they probably will, anyway!) In most cases, you can bring him home the same day. He might be a little sore and need to take it easy for a day or maybe two, but he isn't going to be traumatized or angry with you!

You're doing your dog a favor and protecting his future health by having him neutered. There's really no reason to worry. Good Luck!

WHY do I get a thumbs-down for this answer, and WHY do the others who try to explain the procedure and reassure this asker get thumbs-down as well? Must be some guy who's insecure about his masculinity or maybe his wife talked him into a vasectomy?

Dont freak out, he will be fine, you will drop him into the vets, he will be weighed so that the correct amt of anasthetic is used, he will be sedated, then preped for op, the op takes approx 15 mins, then he will be put into a nice warm secure area to recover, when he wakes up, the nurse will contact you or you will be asked to phone them at a certain time, these neutering ops are routine for vets to preform, so as long asyou have faith in your vet, dont worry, he will be fine, he will go back to vets 10 days or so later for a check up, in between this time, he should wear what is called a Buster collar, so that he cannot like or bite the op area, make sure to leave this on, or the op area will become infected, which can be dangerous, when you get him home on the night of his op, keep him in a warm, quiet area, he may cry alittle, but this is ok, you dont have to clean or go near the op area, and if he coughs a little after, thats ok too, this is from the tube the vet will insert to help him breath under anasthetic, it can dry the throat a little, so give him a nice bowl of water when he is home. He may sleep most of the evening after the op, normal.
Hope this helps.......He'll be fine xxx

Its okay but for a week or two after the surgery he might be looking a little sad so just let him lay by you and comfort him and it'll look like he's been peeing the house but don't punish him because thats actually his vomit and he'll be doing that for a few days after the surgery

The procedure? They cut his balls off.
Would you castrate your son to keep him from being hyperactive?
If you are worried about getting other dogs pregnant, then spay the female dogs, it has no hormonal consequences and nothing in removed, just snipped tubes and it's more expensive.
If you don't own the dogs you are worried about impregnating, but you know there is an immediate circumstantial risk of them becomming pregnant, then you may well be better off making your beloved friend half of a man.
Everyone will convince you that "it's the best thing for your dog" "You are being a good person for doing this" Etc. Notice that these are probably not men telling you this. If your son could possibly live 10% longer if you castrated him, would you do it to be a more responsible mother? He'd be more docile too and start squatting to pee. Less mess!
People can tell you whatever they like, but the fact is, they are cutting off his balls!!!
If your dog is aggressive and you are afraid of him possibly biting you or someone else, then chop them sumbitches off! Do not hesitate, it is definitely the best thing to do. Safety concerns are paramount.
Educate yourself about how to train a dog properly, it may save you a lot of pain and money. An aggressive dog is aggressive because it has an owner who doesn't know how to own a dog. An aggressive dog thinks that IT owns YOU through it's pack mentality. You should teach it otherwise.
