Acknowledge that it's hard to go up to a stranger and 'hit' on them, assuming they did so nicely. Then say you are flattered, and I'd say continue on with one of the following:
** Either a little, harmless white lie and say that he's a nice guy....BUT.....you have someone you are interested in already.
** He's a nice guy and he has a nice smile, BUT....you just finished a relationship and want to be on your own for a while.
Both of the above will maintain the guy's confidence and dignity and give you an indisputable excuse that he cannot argue with.....not if he's a good guy at least. You won't hurt his feelings and make him feel bad for doing something that IS difficult to do.
-or-
You could go the 'other' route and say thanks for being so nice and that you are flattered, but you are simply not interested.
The first two I think are nicer and probably would not make the guy feel bad. But, choose the one you like best, but.....I do NOT approach woman anymore period, because no matter how nice, polite or clever I was in approaching them I got one too many uncalled for snotty-a.s.s responses, and have not, and will never approach a woman 'cold' again. So....to all you ladies out there...being nasty to some men may be appropriate, but to the guys that make the effort and try to be nice about it.......you do damage.

pretend that u didn't hear or ignore it and then rise up and go somewhere else for a min to the bath or something and when u get back act normal as if nothing happened so u wont hurt his feelin for instance or to be polite as u mentioned which most of the ppl are missing nowa days :S

even though you are being polite and you think you are and everybody else thinks you are doesnt mean the other person thinks you are being polite people think things differently he/she can still take it the wrong way but you can still avoid hurting one anothers feelings just say hey im not intrested and walk away or say that you can still be friends good luck

Ask them to talk to you in private for a few minutes. Then talk to them and don't look mad, just be sort of quiet because you don't want to do this. But, they need to know. Say, "I've noticed you might have been a bit interested in me and I'm really flattered by it. But I don't think I'm the right person for you. Do you understand? I'm really sorry and don't be embarrassed because I know this is. I'm not mad, I just want to be able to be in control of my relationships. Okay?" But be really understanding and don't make them or yourself feel awkward. Good luck!

Been there too--just say politely "I like you, but we are just to different, sorry." Works for me.

Be polite, but firm, explicit and unambiguous. They'll be mad now, but will respect you later for saving them time and not toying with them!

laugh and say your taken, they think that if you werent taken you might give them a chance... just make sure no one you like is around cause then they wont ever ask you out...
