You bring up some very good points. Why in hell are the border patrol being punished for doing their jobs of protecting our country and defending there self. This is a huge miscarriage of justice. Why is our government not standing behind these men. What are they doing sending them down to the border if they want them to just turn their head and let the drug pushers and crooks come in anyway. This is without a doubt the biggest bunch of bullshit Washington has ever pulled. After all this is America and we love our country and the BRAVE MEN WHO PROTECT IT. That is when they are not in fear of going to jail for doing their job.Your damn right if someone were trying to run over me I would shoot to kill.

Well, the $35,000 per year is a bit off. It is close to what a probationary, rookie agent with no prior law enforcement experience will earn. As a journeyman agent a BPA can earn between $65 - 80,000 per year.
There are numerous factor to consider when determining what a border patrol agent will earn. These include pay grade and in-grade step, AUO, FLSA, night differential, holiday pay and overtime. Never forget, annual cost of living raises come like clock work for federal employees. As a local police officer I found it common that I and more senior officers could wait from two, to as much as five, years for a cost of living raise.
The lowest starting grade for a border patrol agent trainee is a GL-05. Dependent upon prior law enforcement experience, you can enter as a GL-07. As a GL-05, the 2007 pay is an annual salary of $35,595/year. For a GL-07 it is $40,519 / year. Upon completion of the academy the trainee agent is certified for Automatic Uncontrolled Overtime. This adds 25%, for a a projected annual salary of $44,493 for a GL-05 and $50,648 for a GL-07. I mention that this salary is projected because at 6.5 months of service the trainee agent undergoes probationary exams in law and Spanish. Upon obtaining a passing score the trainee agent receives a grade increase from GL-05 to GL-07, or if he/she entered as a GL-07; a grade increase to GL-09. A GL-09 with AUO receives about $56,486 per year. After 1 year of service at the increased grade the trainee agent will receive an automatic grade increase. The GL-07 will increase to a GL-09 and the GL-09 that entered on duty as a GL-07 will increase to a GL-11. A GL-11 earns about $66,140 with AUO. (I say about because automatic cost of living increases will have kicked in at this point.)
GL-11 is the current journeyman grade. This means that it is the end of automatic promotions. All active journeyman agents will attain this grade and remain there until applying for competitive promotion to a management grade.
While the GL grade increases stop at grade 11, the step increases do not. A GL-11 will pass 1 year as a GL-11 step 1. At the end of that year you can count on a cost of living raise and a step increase to GL-11 step 2 (GL-11/2). After GL-11/4 the increases go from once per year to once per every 2 years and will slow further at the higher step increments to a maximum of GL-11 step 10. As an example of pay, a GS-11 (similar to GL-11) step 10 in service today is making well over $80,000 per year.
Add to this locality pay for certain areas. For example, a GL-05 trainee agent assigned to South Texas won't receive locality pay. However, a trainee agent assigned to Southern California will receive up to 11% extra for the higher cost of living.
Next, you have to consider the Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA) paid for any work over 85.5 hours in a pay period. Each pay period is 2 weeks long. Typically BP agents work a 50 hour week for a total of 100 hours per pay period.
Finally, add to this total the night shift differential (6:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m.), Sunday differentail, Sunday night-shift differentail and the double pay on holidays worked.
Needless to say, a trainee agent makes quite a bit more than the basic $35,000 per year.
