At first I used to think these were just typos but they come up way too frequently. Either theists seem to have a natural tendency to be poor spellers, or they are trying to accomplish something. So why is it so hard for believers to spell atheist correctly?

The same reason people spell everything incorrectly in here. They can't see the "Check Spelling" button.

and...

The same reason some Atheists use the term "Xians" instead of Christians.

Most don't, but when they do, they probably don't spell check.

Why do (some) Atheists spell Christian as "Xian"? Either Atheists have a tendency to be lazy by shortening it, or they are trying to insult and be disrespectful. Why is it so hard for non-believers to spell Christian correctly?

atheist: That's definitely how it should be. Following God is much more important than if we misspell a word. If knowing why you believe what you do isn't more important that typos to you, then your priorities are out of whack. (I corrected the word "they" for you, since you didn't spend enough time with your spell-check.)

I think the only problem is that it's an often-misspelled word. Many people spell monotheism and polytheism wrong, as well. I think with the word atheist, they're spelling it how they think it sounds (long a - thee - est) rather than understanding the word meaning/root. Spelling it athiest just sounds as if they're saying a person is not only athy but he's the athiest!

perhaps they do no longer understand grammar. you already know, the 'a' on the beginning up negates what comes after. hence including the 'a' 'theists' (which theists do seem to spell wisely) turns a believer right into a non-believer. akin to 'biotic' and 'abiotic'. there is irony - yahoo enables 'biotic', yet spell verify indicators 'abiotic' - i assume the yahoos at Yahoo are not getting the grammar the two eh?

As far as I can tell, it's an honest spelling error. (That doesn't mean that I don't want to throw things whenever I see it, though.)

I've seen that spelling from more than a few atheists as well.

Yeah, some silly atheists say "Xian"... But I always call atheists "atheists", not "athiests." I've never seen "athiest" before you mentioned it. No need to stoop as low as some atheists do with the silly name-calling.

I have seen atheists who were poor spellers as well, but that is beside the point.

The word "believe" is often misspelled as well.

Because it's hard for them to admit their beliefs are nonsense and they can't be bothered with silly little things like spelling as long as they're pleasing some other members of their herd.
