Peoples from all over the world allow their religion to dictate how they live their lives based on word of mouth in the so called Scriptures. Yet if we are to believe that religion is just a state of mind, why can't the great minds of this world stop and prevent all the various wars and terrorism. We all have the ability to discipline our minds into making this a better world to live in so what part does religion have to play, if any?

To Coffee-pot 12, I do not have a problem with right and wrong or with authority, Like a lot of people today I fear that religion is and has been the cause of a lot of the troubles that are with us and think we have all been somewhat 'conned' into believing that there ever was such a person as Jesus. Coincidently do you find it strange how most of the religious wars are in the Middle East, the so-called home of where it all began. For various peoples to live their lives based on hearsay evidence and stories, rumours which as we all know can be exaggerrated seems quite sad really. I'm not for a minute saying that there was not such a man called Jesus, but to elevate him into someone other than us mere mortals is like asking us and expecting us to believe in 'fairies'.

freewill. if people read the bible they can choose to obey or not. just because someone says I believe the bible or am a christian or whatever doesn't mean they obey the bible.

those who don't obey it (the true dictates in there which says) these are the ones who commit atrocities. if one says they believe in god yet commit these things in the name of that god (and they claim their god is a god of love)they are liars.

the great minds can't stop it because you cant legislate love of God's law on people's minds. thus freewill. I know it is hard to believe some people choose to do evil because they like it and not because they are mentally ill. Thus you can't rehabilatate such ones, if you could don't you think God would of rehabiliated satan by now?

No some people choose to abuse their freewill and have no one to blame but themselves. they don't want to change. For some religion is not something they do for themselves but use as a weapon or tool of control on others who want to do right but need guidance on what right is. They exploit the goodness of others who care about right and want to do right. even if that right is not right.

religion gives people courage to do things they might not do otherwise (kind of like bottle of courage, alcohol people use)so they feel that victory is in the bag or they won't be punished for doing what is in their hearts desire to commit atrocities and this gives them an excuse (it is god's will).

This is what the so called great minds have to deal with and why they can't solve this problem.

You seem to have a problem with right and wrong, and authority figures....

there are many great minds....some of them are in psychiatric hospitals and others are in government, and others are building little personal armies......

there must be control and common sense, and who but the creator would have the knowledge...

we let it dictate how we live because it's what we believe. do you do things that you don't believe in? if you believe in animal rights, do you go out and shoot an animal for sport? i wish we could stop wars, but holy wars are something that people still believe they are fighting.

I think it's none of your business unless they're imposing their ways of life on you.

edit: to answer your question, just as much as you have the right to choose your own path, I chose mine too.

I try to live a life that is pleasing to God. Jesus died for my sins. If you are a Christian then you should want to do what God wants you to do, dress the way God wants you to dress, or not do certain things or behave a certain way you should be willing to do that. God doesn't want me to wear pants, he doesn't want me to wear that which pertains to a man. Dressing the way he wants me to is the least I can do for Him. HE'S GOD! I'll do what ever he wants me to do to the best of my abilities. I'd rather please God then try to please man.

Because some people just can't do anything, without someone telling them what to do.
