No lid, no oil needed. You can get a splatter screen to keep the grease under control, and you may want to cover the pan with a lid to assist in cheese melting near the end of cooking.
I use a cast iron pan with a splatter screen and a pot lid to help melt the cheese. I only flip the hamburgers once and don't mash them with the spatula.

Frying with the lid on boils the hamburger which has an altogether different taste. If splatter is a concern you can get a wire mesh that will fit across your skillet to reduce that. No oil is necessary if you start on a low heat for a few minutes till some of the hamburgers juices start to cook out, then turn the heat up a litte. I never fry anything with added oil and I don't use non stick pans either.

I like using a tiny bit of vegetable oil , just enough to coat the pan , and I use a lid after the burgers have been flipped.
If you can time it flip them only once. The lid helps keep them very moist, I hate a dried out meat patty.
If you are reheating a cooked hamburger patty I always add a little water and use a lid. It heats them nicely and keeps them moist.

I use a non stick pan so I don't use oil in my pan ..the meat produces it's own bit of oil. - drain as you go along if too much grease is in pan.
If you find the pan spattering with oil..you need to turn the heat down. It's not a Race as to how fast the burgers can cook. ,but yes, you can put the lid on with just a slight bit off so the steam gets out.
I prefer the bbq* but yes, in the winter..I do place a lid on the pan but slightly off so steam is let out*~ :)

No veggie oil. Maybe a spray of non-stick if you need it.
Lid is good, if you must fry them in a skillet, as it will help keep all that grease from taking flight into your kitchen. Put the lid on when the really start going put don't put it on tight, leave enough room for the steam to vent out.

cook without a lid, no oil, there's usually sufficient oil in the meat to suffice, use a lid with a few drops of water added to the pan to melt cheese onto it to make a cheeseburger at the end thou!

Without a lid - you don't want to steam them in their own juice.
And usually if you are using a good 80/20 ground beef mix there isn't a need for any extra oil.
