Its up to you. Its your special day. I only had the same amount of bridesmaids and groomsmen so eveyone would have an escort. Good luck.

No you do not need even sides.
There are plenty of ways to make sure noone is walking down the aisle alone. Say you have more bridesmaids than groomsmen. One (or more) groomsmen can take two girls down the aisle.
The same if there were more groomsmen than bridesmaids. One bridesmaid can be escorted by two groomsmen.

If it must be lopsided then I think it would be better to have extra on the bridesmaids - then one groomsmen could escort two bridesmaids if needed (we did that) or a pair of bridesmaids could come in. Don't ask people who you are not close to you just to even out numbers, but it is acceptable to include their significant others as bridesmaids/groomsmen to balance things out.
Also I think you can go through this whole category of questions and say "No, it's ALL UP TO THE BRIDE AND GROOM" and be pretty much on the money.

Not necessarily - you can just have a best man and bridesmaids. The groomsmen only happen in North America as far as I know.

I say no. I think you can get a way with an uneven number. What you should not do, is invite someone into your wedding party JUST so there is an even number.
The world is not perfect and having an uneven bridal party is not the end of the world.
If you have 3 girls and he has 4 guys, on problem. Have the maid of honor walk down by herself. Then have the remaining two girls be escorted down w/ two groomsman on each arm.
That's fine.

A friend of mine had only 1 bridesmaid but 5 groomsmen (mostly his brothers and best friend). I think it is OK not to match.

You should have even numbers between the sides for attendants, just so that you don't have a bridesmaid walking down the aisle. But, things are getting pretty nontraditional, so you don't have to. And for the rest of the wedding party, you don't have to have children be equal male and female. I had a ring bearer and four flower girls. I had the ring bearer escort one of the flower girls (his sister) out, but the other three walked by their selves out of the church in front of each couple (one bridesmaid and one groomsman).
But, the most important thing to remember is that it's your wedding, and you can do whatever you want.

you don't HAVE to have the same number of bridesmaids and groomnes, but it usually looks better if you do if you're going to have them walk down the aside escorting each other. If your and your fiance can't think of 3 girls and 3 guys, nothing is wrong with mixing the genders of the groom's attendants and the bride's attendants either. if you can find 4 girls and only 2 guys, have one of the girls stand on the groom's side during the ceremony and have them each walk down the aisle by themselves instead of in pairs.

Normally yes you need the same number on each side, I guess if you don't want to then you don't have to but it will look kinda weird. You will have one of your bridesmaid walking down the aisle by herself.

The numbers don't need to match. If you need men to dance with the bridesmaids, you can use the ushers or emcee or toaster to the bride.
