Blu-ray definately not - the pits and lands that are recorded on the disc are smaller and more tighly packed so that a DVD laser won't read it (the same as CD laser not reading a DVD) Also, the Blu-ray laser needs to be a dark blue-violet colour and DVD lasers are red. The same goes for HD-DVD, but I heard that some HD-DVD releases will be double-sided and have a HD version on one side and a DVD version on the other side that can be played by a DVD player.

Alot of HDDVDs can, but they have to have a DVD version on it also. Not sure about blu Ray

No neither disc will play on a standar DVD player. The codecs are different and will not play.

no. they both require special players. and even when you get a player for one, it won't play the other. there are companies that are working on players to play both, though.
