Why do "tree huggers" get on people about recycling and loving the environment etc... when they are clueless as to how a lanfill is operated and as to how to properly recycle themselves?

I work on a recycle truck and see first hand that 100% of everyone does not recycle properly.I challenge anyone to take their trashcan the night before it is collected and sort through it.You will find paper in it,bottles, glass etc... all of which is recyclable.Anyone who claims to recycle properly is full of it.

As for landfills, Unless if you are an idiot you do not live near one.It is not that they are environmentaly a hazard, It's the smell that I could not get past.90% of every truck that pulls into a landfill is pulling a trailer fuilled with ashes that were once trash and were incinerated first thus making it safe to cover over in the landfill.

how many treehuggers here turn their grass clippings into compost? I bet most of you bag it and throw it to the curb or have your mexican gardner do it and this is truly screwing up our environment and costing our taxes billions every year.Get a mulching blade for your mower and let the clippings rot back into the ground and feed the soil.

Hey dude I recycle I always throw my soda and beer cans out the window as I drive on the hi way and I have seen alot of people picking them up,so I am also helping the less fortunate in our country, also I will have you know that I still use wood as source of heat and I always cut down the biggest and oldest trees I can find to make way for the new one, also this way I don't have to use so much electric to heat my home, and last I will have you know I always burn my old tires at night so that they will not fill up land fill space,so there I told you I was doing my part.

I'm probably what you label a tree hugger. I'm not clueless about landfills or how they are managed. I know how and what to recycle properly. I bring it to the local junior college, where some of the money goes to the school.
I use an electric mulching mower. The grass clippings fertilize the grass so I don't need to.
Generalizations all. You have a point but wagging your finger at folks isn't go to change their ways. Lighten up, and figure out what you can do to improve the situation, then make it so.

It's not that landfills are an environmental hazard, it's that they are filled with resources that could be reused. It's waste, pure and simple. If something needs to go to a landfill, so be it, but much of what we throw away is just a product of our disposable consumer culture.
As for recycling, I recycle everything. I'm not 100% sure of the benifits and pitfalls of recycling as there are varied opinions on both sides of the issue, but rest assured that the small amount of trash I generate is devoid of glass, paper, metal, or recycleable plastic.
I also don't have a lawn, as I live in an apartment. If I ever have a house, I plan to not have a giant non productive monoculture in front of my house that needs to be constantly tended to.
Edit: I actually hate hippies. And my hair is pretty short, without getting some sort of 1950's era butcher cut. I'm not hippy, but I'm not a jarhead either. Don't ask a question and then insult those who legitimately answer you.

Maybe you do not understand the owrk 'clueless'? Many people do a bit of this and a bit of that. but you are right - if we ALL recycled properly (who is the Judge EH??) there would be no oil crisis or pollution difficulty. Ah well No one is perfect. But I strive for progress anyway. Now. . .
Here is one idea: Hang your clothes on the line to dry. That is one of the roundabout ways to hug a tree.
Or make your kids take the bath water out to the garden/veggie patch in gallon milk jugs to water the area.
Both of these I do and maybe you (plural that is) can do it too.

i am a tree hugger. but i am also pagan as well. the unfortunate thing about all idealisms, is that it sounds good coming from the mouth, but most people haven't lived the true "treehugging" way. i for instance have grown up on a farm, but if you asked me if i recycle, i make a valiant effort, even though, there aren't many public places you can just give the waste in separate bins...... i live in chicago's northside and at times i find it hard not to have go into the alley just to dispose of whatever waste i may produce.

you sound really bitter, like you beleive your the perfect environmentalist, or you beleive that there is no such thing. people like to do the right thing, but it doesnt always make them 100% right. i personally compost, use non-chemical cleaners, recycle, etc.
i wouldnt say i'm a "tree-hugger", but i am a damn good enviromentalist, and you cant tell me otherwise.
its easier to educate people if you dont attack them first. i work for several big enviro groups, and i'm proud of it.
please, just take it easy

Have you ever considered trying to express yourself without abusing others? Or was your Mother too busy providing services on the truckstop parking lot she didn't teach you anything?
