He tested negative for feline leukemia and AIDS. "Salem" is a domestic shorthair that I took in as a kitten--he is strictly an indoor cat. He seems fine otherwise, except for the liplicking and rough meow over the past few days. Thank you!

Excessive lip-licking can be a sign of nausea. If his meow has changed, it's possible he has a throat irritation. It may be nothing, but you might want to take him to a vet for a check-up - certainly take him if he starts vomiting or develops any other symptoms. Feline leukaemia, AIDS and rabies are about the only illness indoor cats are safe from, there are many other illnesses that can affect them!
