Gossip, idle talk, is a bad thing....it is often malicious. What do you see the Bible saying about it?
I have seen references to idle talk....
in the Book of Revelations, "those who love lies and make lies."

JAM 4:11 Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.
EPH 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs,that it may benefit those who listen.
From Proverbs:
10:18 He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
11:9 With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous escape.

The sin of gossip is listed by the Apostle Paul with a host of other sins which he characterizes as ungodly behavior.
Analytical Literal Translation.
Romans 1:28-32 And just as they did not think it was worthwhile to be having [or, keeping] God in [their] true knowledge [or, consciousness], God gave them over to a disapproved [fig., debased] mind to be doing the [things] not proper, 29 having been filled with all unrighteousness, sexual sin, wickedness, covetous desire [or, greed], malice; full of envy, murder, bitter conflict, deceit [or, treachery], maliciousness; gossips, 30 back-biters, God-haters, insolent persons, arrogant boasters, schemers of evil [things], disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, untrustworthy, without natural affection, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who having known the righteous judgment of God, that the ones practicing such things are deserving of death, not only are doing them, _but_ they are also approving of the ones practicing [them].

i don't know what the Bible says but the Quran says that backbiting is like eating the flesh of your dead brother.
