We have a lot of dogs and it seems that the meat bees are attracted to their food. Most of the dogs that we have are puppies, and I do not want them to get hurt.

Ok after reading the answers, I thought I should put up more details. First off my husband and I breed dogs. We are AKC registered breeders. We used to live closer into town, there weren't very many meat bees in town, but we recently move to the hills and the meat bees are everywhere. It doesn't take them much time to get into the food. We have 8 puppies and so it is easier to feed them outside. We do feed them inside alot, but I just want to cut back on the population of meat bees all the time.

Puppies can get stung both on the outside and on the inside if they swallow a yellow jacket. To get rid of them you can get yellow jacket traps to hang around the yard and look for their nest and apply insecticide directly to it.

You can put the food down for the puppies on disposable plates or heavy duty aluminum foil and throw everything away after you are finished to minimize residue. You can also hose down everything just to make sure and use a cleaner like simple green if you are still attracting the bees.

"Meat bees" (yellow jackets) are attracted to sweet smelling things, due to the sugar in many food products, including those added to some pet foods.

Switching to a hard kibble should do the trick, as would some of the things suggested in the links, below.

WARNING: NEVER ATTEMPT ANY TYPE OF PEST CONTROL WHILE YOUR ANIMALS ARE IN THE OPEN AND EXPOSED TO POTENTIALLY ENRAGED STINGING INSECTS!!!

P.S. I'm wondering why you have "a lot of dogs".
Should we "sic" the ASPCA on you? ;)

Feed them on a schedule and take any left over food away after 10 minuets. It is not a good idea to free-feed a dog.

As was said before don't leave your dogs food lying around after they finish eating, unless its the dry type. Besides yellow jackets canned dog food also attracts flies and other unwelcome critters.
