They only wants what's best for you. They want you to work hard for yourself, so you can appreciate what you have in life. They worked hard to raise you up, the least you can do is show them your thanks and love and continue independently from where they left off. It may seem harmless to have fun now, but if you get carried away with too much fun, you'll only end up with a bunch to learn later on in life. Better work hard now, so when you are living your dream life, you'll look back and say "dang i love my parents for giving me this advice" and you can relax as much as you want to.

Your parents are right, they can only talk from experience of maybe having friends or seeing co-eds they worked with go down the wrong line, and not being able to redeem themselves as quick or even at all as they might want to. They say life is short, but the real point is you cannot afford to waste year upon year not worrying baout what the future may hold. Of course you should play hard and party even harder. But think of it as an insurance/equity policy, the more effort and downpayment you put into making that policy worth something so many years before, the more chance there is of having a payout at the end of its terms, and those who payed into it can enjoy a good life because the effort was present to begin with.
Especially with the rat race which ensues around the world to be the best.. well everyone wants to be the best.. many are called but few are chosen and with more and more qualifications and more schools wanting to teach the future generations, it only means that for you there will be more and more competition so therefore you have to make sure that you are in the best position possible that you could go into any institution and sell the remnants of your hard work through confidence and a folio of experience to back it up. Its proven that the younger and more experienced you are the easier it is for you to compete [not necessarily, but it makes sense]. You want to be comfortable and not having to worry about where the next paycheck is coming from. Take a leaf from your parents, maybe they are in a position of comfortability by which they are able to be telling you you should work hard to have a better life, you might be living a good life now because of them, but imagine going through college and work and boosting your own status and popularity- you could be living an even better life 10 years down the line!

I am not sure how to answer your
Question: Do you mean your parents work hard now?
or do you mean that your parents want you to work hard now?

reading"between the lines" are you voicing your frustration that so much time is spent addressing work, that you would prefer more "time for relationships? - currently?
and are asking: "what's the point of so much work when you hardly see or know or enjoy the people in your life?"

More info would be helpful to know how to respond to the ??

ADDITIONAL RESPONSE: As the parent of 5 grown children, each with individual personalities and both lives and problems of their own -- I look back, realizing
THE VERY BEST I COULD WISH FOR EACH ONE IS TO BALANCE THEIR LIFE -- THAT MEANS WORKING HARD WHEN IT IS TIME TO WORK, WITH THEIR SCHOOL WORK WHEN IT IS TIME FOR SCHOOLING, AND PURSUEING A HOBBY, PLAYING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT,HAVING FUN WHILE EXERCISING IN THE FRESH AIR AND SUNSHINE, SPENDING TIME WITH OTHER KIDS, TIME IN CHURCH ATTENDING TO THEIR SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT, AND FAMILY TIME...SPENDING MOST SUPPER MEALS AT THE FAMILY TABLE WITH THE WHOLE FAMILY TOGETHER.....THIS IS AN INFORMAL TEACHING TIME AND FAMILY FUN TIME TOO, AND IT DESERVES EQUAL ATTENTION AS OTHER WORK TIMES. YOUR GOAL IS TO DEVELOP INTO A DEPENDABLE WELL BALANCED PERSON WHO IS FULL OF LIFE AND LOVE AND FUN.

Education is the key. Get skilled, get educated, and do what you love. I know they want the best for you and I am sure you appreciate that, but parents can go over the top. Assure them you are doing your best and let them know they are taking the fun out of life by over-doing it. Balance is the key.

Maybe they are working hard to save money for you to go to college, and help you with other things as well.

Sorry I am not sure as to what the question is. Maybe you should ask your parents for more quality time though.
