I thought about buying carpet and binding the edges. We would then put paddng. I don't want to destroy the tile but I want a safe place for my daughter to play. What do you think?

Definitely use some padding until your little one is walking very well.
She probably won't fall much until she starts walking, and ceramic tile is very hard [ especially when it up and smacks you in the head ].
Only wash the floor if she is in bed, and asleep [ it's like hitting a sidewalk! ]

My daughter started walking a few months ago - babies are clumsy and will fall on their faces, bump into things, and pretty much use every opportunity to hurt themselves! When our tile is wet, she will always slip and fall - on ceramic tile she once slipped and hit the back of her head really hard, and ceramic is really hard. So, my advice is do whatever you can to keep your little one on some kind of soft rug or carpet. Once they crawl they get everywhere, so a little area rug isn't going to really do much, and no matter how hard you try you just can't watch them every single second. Good luck!

Is this your first baby ?You can get an area rug if it makes you feel better, but babies fall alot. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. It has been this way since the beginning of time. You just have to watch them as much as you can and even then they will do things that you won't catch. I think that maybe you have watched and read too many magazines and TV shows that tell you what a bad parent you will be if you don't do this or that for your baby. They are lying to you, just be careful and your baby will be fine. Just remember babies are a lot tougher than you think.

hey there i have just the thing for you. my son is just now walking as well. we have hard wood floors and tile. the best thing i have found for this which is also educational and cheap. we bought a cushion mat that is about half an inch thick made out of some real firm but spongy material that measures about 15 ft by 15ft. it has the ABC with animals marked in the middles for each corresponding letter. a for aligator b for bear yada yada yada. and the animals actually peel out of it so they can play with them too. my son loves them. they are sold at walmart and costco. probably other places too. give it a try.

Right now put down a quilt, later as she gets more active put down an area rug and place her toys and things she enjoys on the rug. They fall irregardless of the surface, that just goes with learning to walk.

A large, heavy floor rug/mat in the middle of the floor [where your baby will be] and make sure her footwear is the kind with the little rubber dots on them [non slip so they grip the floor], and all should be well. You could also confine her in a play pen [on a rug/blanket/doona,etc] to keep her safe and sound. Good luck.

You can always put down an area rug and then pull it up when she's walking.
Congrats on the baby!
