Coyotes may be killing area cats
Steve Millard can't say for sure who mauled Angelo, the family's 5-year-old cat, but he has pretty strong suspicions based on a neighbor's sighting of a coyote where Angelo's collar and part of his remains were found in Wedgwood on Thursday.

"They're everywhere," Sgt. Kim Chandler, who covers King County for the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, said of coyotes. Yesterday he could offer no population estimate but was confident there are "thousands" in the county.

We had a 'killing spree' going on for awhile here in northern NJ- same thing- coyotes nipping cats and small dogs out of yards and porches. NJ convened a hunting season for the coyotes. Over 8 months, they got 6.

Coyotes are amazingly intelligent and resourceful and the only thing to do is keep your small pets inside.

There are coyotes in the middle of Milwaukee, WI. The police chief on the south side poo pooed the idea they were a threat till one came up and tried to take his small cocker spaniel while he was walking it on leash (boy did that make the news!!!). People had been calling about missing cats, seeing coyotes jumping the fences and going after their small dogs in their back yards, and were worried a coyote would try to snatch some baby laid out on a towel in the back yards while mom and the kids were sunning themselves. Fortunately that hasn't happened yet.

Selective trapping/killing stopped the worst of the coyotes, and dens are dug up in the spring when they're found. However no cat is safe from a coyote.

Raccoons kill kittens quite easily, and can go after a full grown adult cat without hesitation as well.

As long as people are irresponsible by letting their pets run loose outdoors, wild animals killing them will be a common occurence. This artilce talks about it like it is some surprise! Coyotes here in California have been preying on cats and small dogs for YEARS! Are people not aware that wildlife is surrounded by civilization and urbanization. Most animals have no natural habitat left, and many die or starve because of it. Coyotes happen to be very adaptive so have adapted by taking advantage of the people and pets ivading their space by adding pets to their regular diet. The problem could be solved by people keeping thier pets inside where they belong. The coyotes are only doing what coming naturally to them...feeding themselves and surviving. As long as people are offering them a free meal, they will continue to take it.

They are here (WNY)- and its getting worse- now there are packs running into the roadways at night- I can hear their unholy sounding shrieks and howls nearly every night, and 6 of them had the nerve to venture into my yard a couple nights ago even though I have 5 dogs in my house at the moment (3 my own-2, I am dog-sitting) - all the dogs howling and barking did not deter them from coming through the gate in search of what??? I just don't know!!!

People on the outskirts here in Arizona also have their cats and dogs killed by coyotes. It is always safest to keep them inside.
