Why do people have difficulty reading the Bible as a whole and recognising the beauty of the different and disparant strands brought together and woven as a whole?

Won't people be surprised if they ever find the Ark and finally read what's there? If you line up Exodus and Deuteronomy they don't match.

Hammurabi's Code may be one of the strands, but it didn't make it into the Bible in toto or intact.

Could you not also see the allegory of the coat as being both the story of slavery and deliverance? What does the New Testament say about Joseph and Egypt?

If you quote, "Love the LORD your God with all Your Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength, and your neighbour as yourself." in Hebrew it comes out to precisely ten words, The entire Law. This is the irritant that is the centre of the pearl that is the Old Testament. Moses didn't come down from the mountain with a Torah Scroll on his arm. And the Mitzvoth in Hebrew are positive rather than prohibitive.

How do you know how long the Ten Commandments were, or even for that matter precisely what they were, since the verses which describe them (and not in the language in which they were recorded) have been differently divided countless times and do not even agree with each other in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5?

If you take a good look another strand that made it in was the 200 paragraphs of the Hittite Code, interestingly enough these were inscribed on two tablets. They are more humane than the Code of Hammurabi. Of course there was a time when "enlightened" people questioned whether the Hittites actually ever existed outside of the mention of them in the Bible, much as some question the existence of David, Jesus, Moses, and Abraham even with the wealth of archaeological material that has turned up.

Well put! It is diverse, it is loaded with all kinds of emotions, from amorous to avarice. What a beautiful book. I love reading stories with moral impact to my grandchildren and these have moral impact. I love the life lessons I have learned from these life lessons. This book is complete. It has a beginning and an end. It has love and hate, intrigue and suspense and a superb 'whodunit' that ends with a man hanging himself. It shows compassion throughout in many different forms, the Prodigal son, The Good Samaritan, The child with the fish and loaves, The three wise men assisting in Christs' flight, Jonah in the belly of the great fish, God's promise in the rainbow, Zaccheus' redemption, Abraham's gifted child, Daniel in the Lion's Den, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the fiery furnace, AND IT ALL POINTS TO ONE COMMON THREAD...God's PERFECT love and sacrifice for us.

People have a hard time reading the Bible as a whole because doing so would dispel their claims that there are inconsistencies. The only way to "prove" the Bible false is to point out flaws in it, and the way to do this is to pick and choose pieces that "don't fit."

VERY GOOD! I have been trying for years to tell people that they need to take in the whole Bible in context. It all ties together if people study the thing! I am on a constant one year program to read the whole Bible and after doing it at least a dozen times am still learning new things! Great post!

The words carved in stone was way more than 10 words it was the ten commandments that are longer than 10 words.
The coat was made for Joseph and it ended up being his sale into slavery.

People are forever trying to' pick and choose ' from the Bible in making it self serving.
I would rather have an entire carpet than just one ragged piece !

What beauty? The entire OT is God killing, burning, drowning, maiming, terrorizing, bullying and throwing temper tantrums every time he doesn't get his own way. The NT is all about how he's going to burn you forever in hell if you don't worship him exactly the right way. THAT'S your idea of beauty??
