Try carwashing fundraisers, placing jars for change in your local stores, and most of all, ask your vet if they will help you out with the price. If you let them know your family is strapped, maybe they will let you make payments. If the vet is not willing to help you, find one that will. Also, research "cat diabetes" on Google and make sure you are doing everything possible to help kitty. Also check out PetMeds and see if you can get the medicine cheaper through them. Good luck to your whole family, especially your poor dad (wow, 4 jobs!)

Pet insurance NEVER covers existing problems in a cat, they have to develop things after you purchase the insurance, so that won't help you in this case.

I'd call around the other vets and ask for price quotes on what they'd charge to check your cat out. Bloodwork where they look at the organ functions should be a $90 fee for the test and interpretation. $20 if you need to sub-Q liquids into your cat (you can be taught to do that at home for far less). Stabalizing the diabetes is around $300 for where they do hourly testing of the blood for the sugar levels over the two days. The insulin (depends on which they put your cat on) is the highest at home cost--ours is on 2 units of Lantus twice a day. I got the 5 vials in the box for $140 from WalMart which will last me 8 months. The syringes I get 100 to a box for $16 at WalMart. I called around the different pharmacies for best price on Lantus. It made a huge difference. Even the Pet Apothecary was charging $35 a vial. But the vials don't time out 30 days after starting to use them--the pharmacist said that the insulin isn't as delicate as they once thought and the vials can be used up to 6 months after opening.

$1000 seems high to me. That's why I'd suggest calling around while you have the chance, to see if something better can be offered.

Ok. First you need to take a deep breath. I know this is scary and difficult to deal with but you need a clear head to figure out what you are going to do.

Now, someone above me recommended pet insurance. That wont help you. This would be considered a preexisting condition and the insurance would NOT cover anything related. You would be wasting a monthly payment that could help the cat more.

You should get a second opinion. Some vets charge more then others for the same care. You need to call around and find a vet that will charge less and work with your family with a payment schedule. Once you find a place with a reasonable price for care then you have to find the money.

Every area has organizations that help families with the care of their pets. Different organizations will give you money towards the medication and any procedures. You just have to call around and explain your situation. My Mom had to do it when her dog needed eye surgery. Three different local organizations gave her a total amount of $500. There is help out there for people in your situation. You just have to look. You should call your local SPCA and ask them for advice. They will be able to direct you to other organizations that will help you out.

Don't give up yet! You can find the help your cat needs. Get a second opinion, and find the organizations that will help you. The money they give you, you don't have to pay back. It is a gift. They run fundraisers for this exact situation.

Good luck to you and your precious cat.

Diabetes in cats can be treated. And insulin injections DO NOT cost a thousand dollars! And vets cannot determine if the cat will die from this disease...they would certainly not be able to tell you the cat will die in a month. There is something wrong with this story..either you have an incompetent vet and need to get a 2nd opinion or there is some MAJOR miscommunication between your vet and your family or you are making this up!!

What kind of a question is this? Your cat is going to die in 30 days unless you give the Vet a $1,000 ? Your father and mother have six jobs between them? Sorry dear, I doubt if any of the animal lovers and good people on this site are going to send you a thousand bucks.

I know people who have stabilized their cats with diabetes. I would first call around to see what other places charge. But you can also go to carecredit.com or org, and apply for a pet care credit card sort of, that allows you to make payments on care. I hope he feels better real soon!!
