i work in a veterinary hospital, and just lost a cat to cytauxzoonosis. this is our fifth case thus far, and only one survivor. i urge all of my cat loving friends to look up info. on this disease and get educated because it is by far the most HORRIBLE gut-wrenching death for any creature to endure, and it can be PREVENTED. my heart is still sad for little harry who died in my arms on friday morning. im sad for his owner who had no idea the danger her cat was in just by letting him outside........basically, its a blood parasite that lives in the blood stream of the bobcat. the bobcat is unaffected. when a tick bites the bobcat, it ingests the parasite. if the infected tick bites a domesticated cat, it rapidly becomes very ill. the parasite lives in the blood stream for about 20 days before symptoms appear. after the onset of symptoms, the cat is usually dead within 48 to 72 hours. the death rate is 99%.
look up cytauxzoonosis and see if your pet is at risk. have a good day all.

i never knew that!! thanks so much for posting! i will inform my friends and family! But i have a question... Is it only in bobcat country? Because there hasn't been bobcats were i live for, well, ever. But we have had sightings of cougars, can it be carried by a cougar?

Lyme disease can be transferred to cats too, that's tick borne.
