I would think that the 430EX would do the job just fine. If you want more, the 580EX II should be the external flash you're looking for. Get a diffuser for better result. Something like that bulb stuff are supposed to be better than a regular diffuser.

If you want something more, also get a couple of studio light with umbrella reflector for the family portraits.

Just like your other question (about 24-70 vs 24-105) this one too needs to be answered by pro who use Canon gear for wedding photography.

I have read people using Quantum Q-Flash and pocket wizards and other stuff...so you are not limited to the top of the line 580EX or EX II.

My motto has long been "Too much is never enough". Buy the very top of the line flash Canon offers for your camera. Having a feature and not needing it is always better than needing it and not having it. Also buy the best off-camera flash bracket they offer. Enjoy!
