Does anyone know of a safe way to find past tax returns via online-e-mail or fax? Are they mostly scams or are there a few legit ones that cost money? Thanks!

Form 4506 is Request for Copy of Tax Return. You will get copy of tax return file by you along with all the attachments (like W2, 1099..). For each return the charges are $39 and IRS takes about 60 days to complete your request. In the Form 4506 you can also authorize a third party to receive the return.

Normally, for most of the requirements your purpose is served if you ask IRS for Transcripts instead of your tax return. You can order a transcript by calling 1-800-829-1040, or using Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return. There is no fee for a transcript. Transcript will provide you the needed information.

Transcripts have most of the information from your tax return including information from W2, 1099. The IRS forms can be downloaded from
http://www.irs.gov/

You can call IRS and request that an account transcript or a return transcript be sent to you by mail or fax. Free. If you do not have access to a fax machine, you can receive up to 20 pages of fax per month free from efax.com

The IRS runs a calculation on people who do no longer record. If his earnings replaced into under the submitting requirement or might have been a reimbursement if filed as single, no deductions/credit/dependents, then the IRS will permit the 2009 refund go out mutually as the 2008 return is being processed.

You can only request them from the IRS. If you just need a transcript, it's free - if you need and actual copy, then it's $39. A transcript will suffice for most purposes.

Accuverify.com will get you your IRS transcripts in 1-2 business days. I have worked with other companies in the past. Most just deal with large lenders, and lawyers. You won't find them easily online. But they all get it from the IRS.
