This forum is a snapshot of all the reasons for hate and war and torture in the name of God. This is how it is in the real world. This is religion.

In 1998 the Catholic church apologized for the 'Terrible Crimes’ of Queen Mary. Roman Catholic bishops of England and Wales acknowledged that “in the name of the Catholic religion terrible wrongs were done, for example to Protestants at the time of the Reformation in Great Britain. Her legacy is summed up in the name by which she is known—Bloody Mary. However, the Protestants were equally intolerant. Under King Henry VIII and his successor Edward, people had also been burned for their religious beliefs. Mary’s Protestant successor, Elizabeth I, made the practice of Roman Catholicism a treasonable offense, and during her reign more than 180 English Roman Catholics were executed. Over the next century, hundreds more died for their religious opinion.
The point of this is that religious intolerance is nothing new. Some of the venomous words prompt me to wonder how many in this YA R&S forum would consent to outright persecution of persons of another faith or even do so themselves given the opportunity. Such intolerance does not please God. In fact Jesus said that his true followers would be known for their love. (John 13:35)

Because we are talking about peoples most primitive and absolute fear. Death, and what happens after. More then politics, family, business or anything else. The afterlife, eternity, god. These are powerful things. People are scared talking about them. They want to believe in what ever it is so much, that they have little tolerance for other thoughts. Because if they are wrong, they fear that the most.

Religion is a hot button for most people. Religious views are felt strongly, held dear and mostly taken on faith. Religion is an unknown - we are trusting in and believing in something we can't prove, see or touch in most cases. Beliefs held on such tenuous grounds don't hold up well to questions or challenges. Since we can't truly defend our belief in religion b/c there is no proof, I think we get even more defensive, leading to intolerance from most sectors.

Because faith and belief should be absolute. I have faith in my Christian salvation through the wondrous gift of the risen Lord, Jesus Christ, who is God. How can I then even consider that anyone else's God or faith could be right or appropriate? Why should I beleive that? Faith is a belief in an absolute truth, absolutely.
This should only bother people who have faith in nothing spiritual or meaningful.
In the end, faith is like blackjack; you just gotta believe your cards are right and the other guy's are wrong. The only difference is, with Christ in your heart, you try to get a blackjack for that other guy too.

Probably, because people who are misinformed believe that Christians are narrow-minded, judgmental, bigoted, hate-filled, intolerant types that they keep hearing about or seeing on TV. You know the ones that bomb abortion clinics, carrying signs saying "God hate fags" and banning books, etc.
Ahh, but do they really really know us? We do not "promote" hate, only love. The above are stereotypes that we fight daily. It is very hard to live in a tolerant-obsessive culture.

I know what you mean. I try to have tolerance, but when I see some posts here, I think, why should I? No one else is. But I still try. It's how my daddy raised me.

Where in the Bible does it say that God or Jesus Christ was tolerant of sinful thoughts, ideas, words, people, etc?
We, like God, should not be tolerant! Rather, we should be patient, kind, and longsuffering.

It is probably for the same reason that religion and politics are supposed to not be talked about in polite company
Those two subjects cause a LOT of controversy....

i think it is because this is an area where people TRULY BELIEVE in what they say where the other forums a based on opinion and your experience... this is a great forum for asking the tough questions about faith... if you want to find answers to your questions, you have two choices... ask or have faith that God will answer them when the time is right...
