Fleas are very dangerous on kittens. You need to treat mom now and take up the kittens bedding and wash it in very hot water... you can give mom a flea bath, just take a bit of flea shampoo and rub it around her neck and then soak her body in water for 3-4 minutes, it will drown the fleas. Make sure you comb mom out with a flea comb. Next you are going to need to come out each kitten before you put them back into the clean bedding. Make sure you get every flea you can get. You are going to need to do this at least once a day, I suggest 3 or 4 times for the combing and once or twice for the bedding wash.
Good luck! Make sure you fix that cat and all the kittens!

If you use the dish detergent you need to use the lemon scented Dawn...I'm not sure why, but it works the best.

A free call to the vet to ask what's safe to give a nursing new mother cat to get rid of the fleas will give you the most accurate answer possible.

The kittens are far too young to be treated, and won't be touching the area you treat on the mother if it's ok to treat her. Remember that fleas can be removed manually with a flea comb and a dollop of vasoline (comb the cat, pick off the fleas from the comb and push them into the vasoline to die). They showed that technique on Vets In Practice on PBS when they had three very young kittens come in covered in fleas. It works. And it's safe.

If you can't afford flea medication there isn't much to do (even though the kittens are too young to get flea medication). Call the vet and ask what you can do for the newborn kittens since many chemicals will kill them and they are way too young to give baths.
Try and get one thing of Frontline for the MOM cat but the kittens are too young to recieve it.

You can use dawn dish detergent to get rid of them on a kitten. You soap them up from the neck down (starting at the neck) and then you let it sit for 4 minutes and then rinse well. Also, a flea comb can be very effective, too.

She won't die immeadiately. I'm having the same problem right now! What you have to do is talk to the vet because most pet stores don't carry flea killer for kittens that young. You need to schedule a vet appointment as soon as possible. Don't just use normal flea killer because it could kill them.

You should call your vet. They can answer your questions. They may be able to help you out with some free flea meds untill you can afford them. Good Luck

take them outside and brush them with a flea comb.

"How do I get rid of fleas on a young kitten less than 6 weeks of age?

Many people ask this question and so often they are given the wrong advice. People will often recommend flea powders, flea rinses, essential oils and other chemicals that are far too dangerous to use on kittens less than 6 weeks old.

It is not safe to put chemicals on kittens of less than six weeks of age. Fleas themselves can also be very dangerous to young kittens and can even result in a kitten dying from anaemia so you do need to kill these fleas. If the kitten is with it's mother and nursing it is more than likely that the mother cat has a flea infestation so first you need to treat the mother cat. If there are other cats or dogs in the household you need to treat all pets and also your house.

How to kill fleas on a very young kitten

The safest way to treat a kitten under 6 weeks of age for fleas is to bathe him using warm water and Dawn dishwashing detergent and then to manually pick off remaining fleas. Dawn dishwashing soap is very effective and it kills fleas quickly. Many breeders bathe their cats in Dawn.

Fill your sink or tub with warm water. (Test the temperature as if you were giving a baby a bath). Using the kitchen sink is often easiest as you don't have to bend down and you are more in control. Immerse the kitten up to his neck and insure that he is saturated. Wet his face and head with a face washer. Then lift him out and place him on a towel. Gently massage in the detergent. Massage the soap all over his body and around his neck, ears, face, head and under his chin, being very careful not to get soap in his eyes. The fleas are not silly and will head for the high dry ground of the head area.

Then put him back in the water for a rinse. If he is not fighting and struggling too much try to keep him submerged for a few minutes. If he is clawing you to pieces get the job over and done as quickly as possible. Having two people perform the operation is often easier. One to hold the kitten and one to massage and wash the the kitten. When finished wrap him up in a dry towel and dry him off. Try to do this in a warm atmosphere and don't let him get cold.

After the Bath - Go over the kitten with a flea comb

Flea combs are very inexpensive and usually quite effective in catching fleas that still remain on the kitten after his bath. While the kitten is still damp comb over his body with a flea comb or pick off the remaining live fleas with you finger and thumb nails while they are struggling to get through the damp hair. Have a cup of boiling water ready to drop the fleas into as you catch them. Boiling water is best as I've seen fleas jump out of cold water. Combing may be easier on a shorthair kitten than a longhair one. I have been told that putting some Vaseline on the flea comb near the base of the comb's teeth stop the fleas from escaping the comb.
