I've been run down now for about 4 - 5 months. I'm a second year law student who at the end of my first year - this past May - burned out. I started working at a large firm this past summer and was extremely stressed out every day. I also started a new relationship this summer, and while wonderful in many ways, it is also very taxing on my energy reserves. I used to work out daily but I no longer do. It's been about a year since I've had a consistent workout schedule and "healthish" diet. I've gained 20 lbs. in the past year. Can you can give me some tips on getting my health/life back on track? Also, if you have a detailed plan, could you tell how long it will be before I feel better.

Thank you so much!!

There are many things you can do to find stress relief. Some of them are:1)Getting active, walking, yoga and tai chi are a few good activities. When I go for walks I meditate on being positive and nicer, I start out stressed and grouchy sometimes and end off kind of high for the rest of the day. 2)Progressive relaxation which is where you get in a comfortable position and start at your feet and go up through your body and mindfully relax.3) Visualization , take a few minutes to concentrate on the most relaxing experience you can remember. For me I love to remember the first time I saw my son when he was born,it's something I am very thankful for in my life. I also always take oppurtunities to look at other babies I see in passing which gives me the warm and fuzzies.4) Have faith that you will have a full life with the peace you need, you don't have to know how it will happen just know it will. Thank God out loud for your dreams coming to pass. See yourself fit and more peaceful. 5)Get a massage,6)enjoy nature,7)care for pets,8)make your own indoor garden.9)Be creative,10)find a hobbie you enjoy.Reading, volunteer work, painting, music etc... I love going to thrift stores.11).Become self aware, study self awareness.Becoming aware of how you interact with others, and your desires attitudes and emotions helps you take responsibility.Responses to stress vary, people find that they work more happily with deadlines, but react badly to noisy places.Find out if you are an introvert or an extrovert. 12)Set goals. 13)Establish priorities. 14)Integrating and accepting what you cannot change in any scenerio you place yourself. For example,I used to get all mad when I was driving here in Charlotte,NC, the traffic can be bad . Now I sometimes see things like this everyone has thier head on thier body sort of like a weeble(15)use humor), making decisions and there is nothing I can do about thier decisions,(I am some what detached ,16) I am not controlled by emotions)and also, I 17)practice being generous to others in my driving, I leave in plenty of time also, which I had to go to sleep earlier to accomplish. If you are not already being18) assertively balanced, stand up for yourself in respectful, kind ways when nessecary.19)Journaling is part of self awareness.20) Gain perspective, talk things over with yourself or a friend.Use 21)positive self talk, stop self defeating thoughts.(personally I speak out scriptures from the bible)22) Manage your time and get enough sleep.23) Be confident . Remember no one is better or more valuable than you. You need not execute punishment or judgment to others although when I am mistreated I24) forgive but I also25) set boundaries. Trust is earned. Justice come to all. 26)Communicate effectively, which includes listening and being aware of differences.27) Build social support but be careful and find peaceful nice friends. Don't hang around angry negative people.28)Eat well. get plenty of live foods(fruits and veggies) in your diet, avoid fried 'dead foods' which will promote stress. 29)Drink plenty of water and keep a positive outlook .

A bike ride a day is a vacation for your mind, body and soul. These numbers vary on a person's size and daily activity but on the average men burn 2200 calories a day and women burn 1700 calories a day. That means that you need to keep the calories below those marks or you will gain weight. If you are able to lose 3500 calories in a seven day period then that will lose you one pound of fat. There are a few ways to do this. One way is to eat less and make sure it is easy to digest foods, like vegetables, lettuce, chicken, fish, etc.. The other way is to workout. I suggest this route because you have a much more fun lifestyle and look better. Working out tones and tightens your muscles as well as burns calories. The easiest way to lose weight is to buy a road bike (ten speed) and ride at least an hour a day. The typical 1 hour ride will burn between 800-900 calories. When you get better it makes good sense to ride two to three hours 3 to 4 times a week. You can do the math on the calorie lose. You can lose weight quickly, safely and it's better for your heart nd lungs as well. Good Luck!!!

Why don't you just start by getting out and walking? In other words, just start small and gradually get up there. As you find this feels good you will be motivated to try other exercises. Do you have a friend to go walking with?
